Why Do I Still Live Like a Prisoner After God Set Me Free? (Luke 4:14-22) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study
Hearing God in Luke: Jesus stood up in His hometown synagogue, read Isaiah out loud, and said it was about Him. Today we're in Luke 4:14-22, where Jesus announces His mission: good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, sight to the blind. The word for liberty is the same word Luke used earlier for the forgiveness of sins. It means release, pardon, a debt wiped off the books. I also share a story from a prison in Kenya that changed how I read this passage, including one woman who stayed in her cell after her freedom had already been paid for. Why does power so often show up on the other side of testing? What does it mean that Nazareth was where Jesus was "brought up"? Why does it matter that Jesus read the word "anointed" out loud about Himself? What kind of proclamation is Jesus actually making? Are you living like someone who has been set free?
