Many of us have studied the godly woman of Proverbs 31, but did you know she has a male counterpart in Psalm 112? Today we study it together. Many of its traits apply to both men and women, but the first hearers would have heard it as a picture of a godly man. "Light arises in the darkness for the upright; He is gracious and compassionate and righteous." (Psalm 112:4) Questions this episode answers What is Psalm 112 about? Psalm 112 describes the blessed life of a person who fears the Lord and delights in His commands. This person is generous, gracious, compassionate, and steady in hard times. It pairs closely with Psalm 111, which praises God's own character. How is Psalm 112 like Proverbs 31? Both passages are Hebrew acrostics, with lines that follow the alphabet. Both describe a person whose fear of the Lord shows up in daily life, work, and generosity. Psalm 112 paints this picture with a man in view. What does it mean to not fear bad news? Psalm 112:7 says the righteous will not fear bad news because their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. This is not pretending hard things away. It is a settled trust that God is in control.
