Lessons from Portugal's BLACKOUT on Good Morning Portugal! #apagao

The 2025 Iberian Blackout was a historic "total zero" event that simultaneously disconnected the power grids of Portugal and Spain from the rest of Europe. It was triggered by a technical failure in the high-voltage interconnector with France, which caused the Iberian Peninsula to become an "electrical island" unable to balance its own load.

Because the grid was running on a very high percentage of renewable energy at the time—which lacks the "inertia" of traditional power plants—the system couldn't absorb the shock, leading to a cascading collapse in under 90 seconds.

For nearly ten hours, 47 million people faced a total halt of metro lines, grounded flights, and failed telecommunications, marking the most significant grid failure in Europe for over two decades.
