The Dark Origins of Santa Claus: From Odin to Coca-Cola

Santa Claus is one of the most recognizable figures on Earth. But what if the version we know today is only the final mask worn by something far older? In this episode of Broadcasting Seeds, host Bennett Tanton traces the true origins of Santa Claus across ancient pagan mythology, Christian history, European folklore, and modern corporate culture. From Odin and the Wild Hunt, to Saint Nicholas, to Krampus and other dark enforcers, this episode explores how the Santa figure evolved into a global symbol of reward, judgment, and behavior control. This is not an anti-Christmas episode. It is an examination of symbolism, archetypes, and how stories shape belief, obedience, and authority from childhood into adulthood. We explore how Santa became a “watcher” figure, why that role appears across cultures, and what it may mean psychologically and spiritually when an omniscient judge replaces discernment, grace, and truth. If you’ve ever wondered where Santa really came from, why he knows when you’re sleeping, and what message that trains us to accept, this episode will change how you see Christmas forever.
