PotLuck Saturday: Lozenges, Roller Rinks & Snack Bar Pizza
Happy Pot Luck Saturday! Root beer Luden’s, Sucrets in little metal tins, roller disco, satin shorts, and a violin-playing skater who crashed into a mirror. We talk about the cough drops of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, Smith Brothers, Vicks, Ricola, and the ones that were basically candy disguised as medicine. We talk old commercials, mysterious goo-filled centers, and Kev’s theory that sucking on a lozenge makes you appear more intelligent. Then it’s roller rinks, Saturday afternoons with four dollars in your pocket, shooting the duck, whipping your friends around the corners, disco balls, arcade games, and snack bar pizza. We go back to the 1760s, James Leonard Plimpton’s four-wheel invention, the golden age of skating, and the disco explosion of the late ’70s. We talk Roller Boogie, Xanadu, CHiPs, the decline of neighborhood rinks, and the historic ones still hanging on, from Detroit’s RollerCade to California’s Moonlight Rollerway. It’s a Pot Luck Saturday with old-school remedies, tube socks, maple floors, forgotten skating movies, and one more disappointing soft pretzel. Happy Saturday! We’ll Talk Shawtly!
