Yet more than a century ago, the worldβs leading intellectual institutions recognized its fatal flaw. In Part 1 of The Ultimate History Lesson: A Weekend with John Taylor Gatto, John details why Oxford and Cambridge eliminated short-answer tests 100 years ago. Their educators observed that high scorers possessed a knack for retaining disconnected fragments of data, but lacked the capacity to construct authentic, independent relationships between those facts. When those students did articulate connections, they were merely reciting someone else's pre-fabricated synthesis. Despite this insight, the compulsory schooling apparatus made short-answer and multiple-choice testing the cornerstone of public instruction. Gatto reveals that this was not an oversight: standardizing tests standardizes minds, producing obedient functionaries trained to seek external answers rather than developing genuine critical discernment.
