Zhang Ziyu Shaking Up Women's Basketball | Global News

Zhang Ziyu, China’s seven-foot-three basketball sensation, is rewriting the game with her dominant play and infectious energy at the Women’s Basketball World Cup. Scoring 13 points in her debut to lead China to a nail-biting 75-72 win over Puerto Rico, she’s forcing opponents to rethink their defensive strategies. Her playful banter with U.S. star Paige Bueckers—complete with mock shot-blocking jokes—showcases the unexpected camaraderie beneath fierce competition. Far from intimidating, Zhang’s coachable, gamer-loving personality and rapid skill development make her a rising global star. Even seasoned defenders admit they’re still learning how to contain her, while teammates like WNBA star Han Xu see this tournament as the perfect stage for her global breakout. Quiet on media, focused on the court, Zhang is proving that height, heart, and humor can combine to shake up the world of women’s basketball.
