Shelton’s Upset Sends U.S. Open Into American Hands | Global News

Ben Shelton stunned the tennis world by defeating reigning champ Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set, four-and-a-half-hour U.S. Open thriller that ended just after 3:30 AM — capped by Shelton’s blistering 146 mph ace. The win, which snapped Alcaraz’s 18-match Grand Slam winning streak and came amid Alcaraz’s recovery from wrist injury and illness, was called “the most enjoyable match of his career” by Shelton. With roaring support from New York fans, Shelton advances to face fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semis — a matchup that guarantees an American finalist for the first time since Andy Roddick’s 2003 title. This young American star is rewriting history on home soil.
