The Torrents of Spring
Follows two men, Yogi Johnson and Scripps O’Neil, as they navigate a wintry landscape in Michigan. After losing his wife during a prolonged drinking bout, Scripps wanders toward the town of Petoskey while carrying a frozen bird he rescued for warmth. His journey is marked by surreal reflections on Paris, his family’s Confederate history, and his aspirations as a writer and composer. Upon reaching a local diner, he shares a meal with an elderly waitress who recounts a mysterious story regarding her mother’s disappearance in France. The narrative employs a satirical tone, frequently referencing literary figures and intellectual movements of the era. Through these eccentric encounters, the text explores themes of alienation, the search for new beginnings, and the absurdity of the human condition.
