Networked Machinists: High-Technology Industries in Antebellum America (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology)

Explores the development of high-technology industries in the eastern United States between 1790 and 1860, predating the Silicon Valley phenomenon. The author highlights the crucial role of "networked machinists" in transforming metal manufacturing, machinery, and machine tool sectors. Meyer examines key industries like federal armories (Springfield and Harpers Ferry), iron foundries, steam engine works, and textile machinery production, illustrating how technological knowledge and skills were disseminated through informal networks rather than remaining proprietary. The text provides detailed case studies and statistical data to support the argument that these interconnected communities of practice were fundamental to the era's industrial growth, ultimately laying the groundwork for future American manufacturing leadership. The author also references primary sources such as government reports, census data, and historical accounts to substantiate his claims about the antebellum industrial landscape.
