Day 5 - More Possessions, More Worries [Introduction 5]
Can having more money and possessions actually make us less happy? In this thought-provoking fifth episode of the Shaar Habitachon Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring Rabbeinu Bachya Ibn Pakuda's timeless teachings in Chovos HaLevavos, revealing why genuine reliance on Hashem offers greater security than even the ability to manufacture unlimited gold and silver. While the alchemist must constantly worry about protecting his accumulated wealth or producing enough for tomorrow, the person who trusts in Hashem enjoys a remarkable sense of freedom. True financial security doesn't come from how much we accumulate, but from knowing that Hashem will provide exactly what we need, whenever and wherever He chooses. Through entertaining and relatable examples, Rabbi Wolbe challenges our modern obsession with acquiring more possessions. From expensive luxury watches and the endless gadgets children receive, to the unforgettable story of a fisherman who already enjoys the peaceful retirement that a wealthy businessman is endlessly chasing, we discover a surprising truth from Pirkei Avos: the more possessions we acquire, the more worries we invite into our lives. Rabbi Wolbe reminds us that happiness does not come from owning the most expensive things, but from being satisfied with what Hashem has already given us. The Torah's timeless wisdom of Sameach B'Chelko—being happy with one's portion—offers a powerful antidote to the pressures of consumerism, comparison, and materialism. The episode concludes with two more extraordinary advantages of Bitachon over the alchemist. Just as Hashem sustains a developing baby in its mother's womb, a chick inside its egg, the birds in the sky, and even the smallest ant, He can provide for every one of His creations regardless of their strength or circumstances. Furthermore, while the alchemist lives in fear of authorities and others who might discover his secret, one who truly relies on Hashem possesses a spiritual security that inspires awe rather than fear. The ultimate lesson is that wealth can bring endless anxiety, but Bitachon brings something money cannot purchase: genuine peace of mind. _____________ This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by The Butler Family Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on May 4, 2026, in Houston, Texas.
