buildquest Revealed: The Planning Platform Behind the Podcast
WHY HOMEOWNERS AND PROFESSIONALS BOTH LOSE
Homeowners walk into design showrooms confused. They don't know where to start, who to hire first, or what a realistic budget looks like. They fill out online forms from lead services thinking they're getting help. Instead they get calls from contractors chasing paid leads with no idea if the project is realistic.
Professionals pay for those leads and spend hours following up with homeowners who have no focus, no budget, and often no idea what questions to ask. The qualification level is terrible. Thousands of dollars wasted chasing projects that never start or fail before ground breaks because nobody addressed the budget during design.
Bill Reid has seen this problem from the trenches for over three decades operating a design-build business in Northern California. This episode reveals BuildQuest, the four-module planning platform he built to solve the problem from both sides.
THE FOCUS PROBLEM
Homeowners think they know what they want. They've heard neighbors spent a certain amount. They've searched online and found budget calculators saying the national average is one hundred seventy-five dollars per square foot. They walk in delusional about cost and unclear about scope.
Professionals need focus. An architect's mission on day one is to understand who you are as a customer, what style you want, what programming you need, and whether your budget is realistic. Without that focus the motivation to design gets undermined and service quality drops.
Lead services amplify the problem. They collect a piece of the pie without doing real work. New contractors might need them to get started, but the business plan should be getting off those platforms as fast as possible.
THE BUILDQUEST SOLUTION
BuildQuest is a journey that takes homeowners through four modules to create focus and realistic expectations before they hire anyone.

PROJECTPROFILE
This is the project brief builder. Homeowners answer questions about where they're building, what project type, what architectural style fits their region, what quality level matches their lifestyle, and what rooms and spaces they need.
BuildQuest delivers styles and themes relevant to the user's geographic area. Users can browse all architectural styles and curate their own. They select quality level based on whether this is a forever home or a starter custom home. They build programming by selecting rooms, spaces, and additional structures.
The output is a project brief an architect can intake and use. It fast-forwards the discovery process so professionals aren't spending hours working through clients who are all over the place.
VISIONSPEC
This replaces Pinterest fatigue. Instead of scrolling thousands of images of other people's houses and saving them in random emails and Google Sheets, homeowners see AI-generated images of their own project.
Users work in the playground to refine and recreate images. They create vision boards for each space or organized by material category. If they like the tile on a backsplash or the beams in an entry, they tag it to construction categories. Later they can generate a vision board for all tile on the project or all cabinetry organized by room.
The designer receives organized collections showing exactly what the homeowner wants, not a pile of screenshots.
COSTCOMPASS
This is the financial module. It builds realistic budgets based on project programming, quality levels, and vision inputs using 30 years of actual construction data from Bill's design-build business in Silicon Valley.
CostCompass asks homeowners their investment goal before showing the budget. It asks about land value and mortgage balance. Then it presents project finances comparing what the homeowner expected to invest against what the project will likely cost.
This is the big reveal. Some people realize they need to adjust scope. Others see the budget and decide to move ahead. Either way it happens before design begins.
Users can break the budget open to see allocations for primary home, basement, ADU, land cost, construction budget, design fees, and permits. They can create versions by adjusting scope or valuations and compare them side by side.
The comparative market analysis feature estimates anticipated home value using standard appraisal principles. Homeowners can make informed decisions about whether they're over-investing or under-investing in their neighborhood.
The financing tab shows typical construction loan calculations including monthly payments and closing costs. The affordability tab summarizes recovery value, cash needed, and monthly payment impact.
PROQUEST
This is where prepared homeowners connect with professionals. The homeowner creates a design statement using inputs already populated from earlier modules. It takes about a minute.
BuildQuest provides options to start engaging with professionals. When the homeowner taps send, the professional receives a complete project brief from someone who has done the planning work.
Episode 77 reveals what professionals see on their end and how they can use BuildQuest as an onboarding tool.
WHO PAYS AND WHY
Homeowners pay for BuildQuest. The cost is a fraction of one percent of project investment. It saves money by creating focus so design teams aren't running around spending the homeowner's money trying to figure things out.
Professionals don't pay. They're tired of crappy lead services and unrealistic homeowners. BuildQuest delivers motivated professionals working with prepared clients.
THE TIMELINE
BuildQuest is nearing completion. Bill is selecting 20 to 50 early advanced users across the nation — homeowners, architects, designers, interior designers, contractors, and home builders — for private invites to provide feedback before public launch.
A private community will follow where professionals and homeowners can connect separately and together.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Episode 77 is specifically for professionals but homeowners should listen too. It reveals what professionals see when a homeowner reaches out through ProQuest and how the platform works from the supply side.
Enlighten, empower, protect. Now go make it happen.
