When Kajsa first felt called to write about prostitution, she quickly realized that the same arguments used to defend commercial sex were being used to defend surrogacy. Kajsa notes that prostitution is where you sell sex without reproduction, and surrogacy is where you sell reproduction without sex, and in both cases, the woman being sold does not get to enjoy either sex or reproduction. Sex-work apologists will claim that radical feminists don’t ‘talk to sex workers,’ but Ekman certainly did for her book Being and Being Bought published in 2013. What she found was that it’s not a ‘job like any other,’ that ninety-eight percent of people selling sex are women, and that they have a mortality rate 40 times higher than women not in prostitution. She found that sex-work advocacy groups and unions were fake organizations established to protect commerce, not women. So, with such grim statistics, why aren’t more politicians and advocates invested in the Nordic Model, which criminalizes sex buyers.
