Terrifying & True | Thierry Tilly — The Conman Who Captured an Aristocratic Family

From Weekly Spooky: Scary Christmas Stories | Terrifying Tales to Creep Your Holiday Henrique Couto | Scary Stories & Horror Expert

Thierry Tilly persuaded members of France’s de Védrines family that hidden enemies were plotting against them, then used that fear to control their relationships, work and fortune. Terrifying & True follows the manipulation from the family’s château at Monflanquin to their isolation in Oxford. Promises of protection escalated into coercion and abuse before an escape helped expose the scheme. This account examines how a trusted adviser gained such power—and how the family began to break free. Tilly was ultimately convicted of crimes including fraud and torture.
