Cardboard | Whispering Boxes and Warehouse Creature Horror
Whispers rise from a foul-smelling box in Douglas Waltz’s “Cardboard.” A new worker at a medical-supply warehouse is told the odor comes from the water used to make the packaging. That explanation cannot account for the voice asking for help. Alone over a long weekend, he starts cutting and taping a cardboard labyrinth, drawn into work that feels less like a job than a command. Boxes, bubble wrap and ordinary supplies become the ingredients of industrial creature horror. Something wants him to finish building—and it has plans for whoever comes in on Monday.
