Vatican Commission Votes Against Women Deacons

Vatican Commission Upholds All-Male Clergy, Leaves Door Open for Women DeaconsA Vatican commission voted against allowing Catholic women to serve as deacons, maintaining the Churchs tradition of an all-male clergy. The decision, outlined in a report given to Pope Leo, was seven to one, with members concluding that historical and theological research currently excludes the possibility of women deacons. However, the commission recommended further study, suggesting the door might not be entirely closed for the future. Pope Francis had established two commissions to explore the possibility of women serving as Catholic deacons, but the first public disclosure of their findings upholds the Churchs current practice.
