States Sharing Driver Data with ICE: A Security Concern
On November twelfth, a surprising issue emerged: states, even those led by Democrats, are inadvertently sharing drivers data with federal immigration authorities through a digital system many officials dont understand. Lawmakers urge governors to block ICE from accessing this sensitive information, citing public safety and preventing politicized actions. Nlets, a nonprofit facilitating information exchange, allows ICE and Homeland Security Investigations to make nearly nine hundred thousand queries in the past year. Only a few states, like New York and Illinois, have blocked ICEs access, as state employees were unaware of datas destination. This effort to cut off ICEs access is part of a broader movement to push back against federal deportation initiatives, highlighting states need for better data safeguarding.
