Chinese Scholars Charged in Biological Material Smuggling
Three Chinese scholars at the University of Michigan, Xu Bai, Fengfan Zhang, and Zhiyong Zhang, were charged for allegedly smuggling genetically modified roundworms and other biological materials into the U.S. They were working under J-one scholar visas and conspired to receive hidden shipments from China. The shipments contained petri dishes of Caenorhabditis elegans roundworms, a common organism used in genetic research. The university fired them after they refused to cooperate with an internal inquiry. This incident follows a series of cases involving Chinese nationals accused of illegally moving biological materials to or from the universitys research facilities. The Daily News Now! - Every city.
