What Sandra Birchmore Typed to Her Cop's Wife — and Why She Never Sent It
Sandra Birchmore typed a message to Matthew Farwell’s wife telling her everything — and never sent it. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott says that moment captures exactly how completely Sandra’s understanding of her own situation had been reshaped over years of alleged targeting by Stoughton police officers. Sandra met Farwell through the department’s youth program when she was thirteen. She had no father and her mother was dead. By adulthood, she believed she was in love with the man who allegedly exploited her vulnerability from the start. Her closest friend recognized the danger instantly. Sandra could not. Scott, author of Nightbird, sits down for the first of four segments examining the psychology behind the Birchmore case. The conversation covers why Sandra’s losses made her disproportionately vulnerable to officers in positions of trust and what the DNA results revealing Farwell was not the biological father meant to Sandra’s state of mind.
