Who are You without Alcohol
WHO ARE YOU WITHOUT ALCOHOL? The Identity We’re Afraid to Lose and the Self We’re Learning to Trust Tribe Sober Podcast | Hosted by Lynette Magrid le Roux🎵 Intro & Outro Music: “Remember” by Sutherland 🦋 Episode Summary Who did you believe alcohol helped you become? More confident? Funnier? More spontaneous? More interesting? This week’s episode was inspired by powerful conversations in our Breaking Free and wider Tribe Sober communities. What began as a simple question about alcohol opened up a much deeper exploration of identity, belonging, emotional overwhelm, and the exhausting ways we try to prove we’re good enough. Drawing on the work of Dr Julia DiGangi and Positive Intelligence, Lynette explores how the coping strategies we develop in childhood can become the very identities we spend our adult lives defending. And how alcohol can become a coping strategy for coping with our coping strategies. But underneath those identities lies something far more enduring: our ageless essence. Perhaps sobriety isn’t about becoming someone new. Perhaps it’s about learning to recognise and trust who we’ve been all along. 💜 Key Insights & Nuggets The identity we’re afraid to loseWhen alcohol helps us feel confident, funny or uninhibited, we can begin to believe those qualities belong to the drink rather than to us. The little one we’re still protectingOur Pleaser, Controller, Achiever and other saboteurs began as coping strategies. Over time, they became identities we work tirelessly to maintain. The peacemaker and the war withinWhat happens when we spend our lives keeping everybody else happy while abandoning our own emotional needs? Did emotional overwhelm pour the drink?Between the feeling and the behaviour lies an opportunity for curiosity. What are we believing about our ability to cope? Learning to care for ourselves through our feelingsOne of the Tribe’s most powerful discoveries: we don’t have to numb, escape or fix every uncomfortable emotion. We can learn to care for ourselves while experiencing it. The beautiful 50/50 of being humanA woman celebrates 30 days alcohol-free and later that evening feels sad and exhausted. Both experiences are real. Neither cancels the other. Our ageless essenceBeneath the identities, expectations and coping strategies is a deeper wisdom we’re learning to access and trust. ✨ Three Lies About Transformation One day I’ll arrive. Transformation isn’t a destination. It’s a lifelong journey of discovery. Insight is enough. Understanding our patterns matters, but change happens when we apply what we’re learning. I can do it alone. Connection, community and accountability help us turn insight into lived experience. ✍️ Questions for Reflection Who did you believe alcohol helped you become? Which identity are you most afraid of losing? What coping strategies have become part of who you believe you are? When uncomfortable feelings arise, do you immediately try to change them—or can you become curious about how to care for yourself through them? Who might you discover yourself to be if you stopped trying so hard to be someone in particular? 💫 A Thought to Take Away “We can experience discomfort without abandoning ourselves.” Perhaps the greatest gift of sobriety isn’t becoming happier, more confident or more interesting. Perhaps it’s learning to trust ourselves—and recognising the ageless essence beneath all the identities we’ve spent our lives protecting. 💜 With Gratitude A heartfelt thank you to the men and women in Breaking Free 11 and our wider Tribe Sober community whose honest, courageous reflections inspired this episode. Your willingness to share your lived experiences reminds us that transformation doesn’t happen through insight alone. It happens through curiosity, practice, connection and the courage to experience life as it is. 🦋 Work With Lynette If you’re ready to explore the beliefs, identities and coping strategies that may be keeping you stuck, I’d love to support you.
