Baiae: Rome’s Sin City Beneath the Sea | Luxury, Scandal, and Lost Ruins

Baiae: Rome’s Sin City Beneath the Sea explores the scandalous lost city of Baiae, once the most luxurious resort town in the Roman world. Located near Naples in the volcanic Campi Flegrei region, Baiae became the playground of emperors, senators, generals, and Rome’s elite. In this mega episode of The Strange History Podcast, we uncover thermal baths, seaside villas, secret affairs, poisoning rumors, political plots, and engineering marvels like the Temple of Mercury at Baiae. We also cover Nero and the alleged murder plot against Agrippina the Younger, the writings of Seneca the Younger, and how volcanic ground movement slowly sank much of Baiae beneath the sea. Today, the Underwater Archaeological Park of Baiae preserves roads, mosaics, statues, villas, and Roman luxury frozen underwater. This is where Rome came to indulge—and where history drowned in style.
