Alfama: Ghost Streets of Old Lisbon | Haunted Alleys, Plague Shadows, and Earthquake Spirits

Alfama: Ghost Streets of Old Lisbon explores the eerie legends, true tragedies, and haunted streets of Alfama, the oldest surviving district of Lisbon. In this mega episode of The Strange History Podcast, we uncover how Alfama survived the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon Earthquake while much of Lisbon was destroyed. Survivors fled uphill into its narrow lanes, where stories soon spread of wandering spirits, voices asking for streets that no longer existed, and the dead searching for lost homes. We also cover the legend of the Widow at the Window, plague-era knocking doors, sailor ghosts waiting by the river, phantom religious processions near Church of São Miguel, eerie footsteps in empty buildings, and how Fado adds haunting beauty to Alfama after dark. This is where Lisbon’s past still walks the stairs.
