Nian & Mardi Gras: Defining the Winter Monster & Spring Rebirth | Lunar Myths & Solar Fire (Feb 18, 2026)

Is the legendary monster "Nian" more than just a myth, and how does it connect to the revelry of Mardi Gras?

Ryan Gable decodes the Chinese New Year through the personification of the Nian—a creature representing the cold, silent dormancy of winter that consumes life before the dawn of spring. We explore why the ancient remedies of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red are the ultimate weapons against the "dead of winter."

In this episode, we trace the transition from the "Daikan" to the Lantern Festival, examining the taboos of the new cycle—from the dangers of showering away luck to the symbolic severing of wealth. We then bridge the gap to Mardi Gras and Lent, uncovering the shared roots of these global traditions as they navigate the 40-day transition from darkness and fasting to the resurrection of the sun.
