October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and The Scene Project is shining a spotlight on one of our own—Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter and MCMO member, Katy Tessman. Katy has a powerful story to share. Diagnosed with breast cancer at just 39, she bravely underwent a double mastectomy on her 40th birthday and has been cancer-free ever since. In 2013 she published a book for children about breast cancer and in 2022, she started sharing her original music through outreach events: https://www.katytessman.com/outreach.html Stories and songs truly heal and her aim is to evoke laughter and tears, spread smiles, while fostering a sense of hope and togetherness. She’s celebrating the incredible 15-year cancer free milestone with a special show at Icehouse in Minneapolis on Friday, October 18, alongside the talented Laura Hugo, raising funds for Gilda’s Club – MN, a place that offers support to those navigating the cancer journey. Last October, Katy released her album Fly, which received a starred review in RnR Magazine, calling it "a quietly inspiring pleasure."
