Inside Chicago’s Corrupt Justice System | Former Homicide Prosecutor Gregg Owen
Former homicide prosecutor Gregg Owen spent years inside one of the most violent and notoriously corrupt eras in Chicago history. During his career with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, he prosecuted more than 60 murder cases and became the first Chief of the Gang Prosecutions Unit in Illinois.
Today, Gregg is taking us behind the scenes of a world most people only know from movies and headlines.
We talk about what actually happens during a homicide prosecution, the difference between solving a murder and proving it in court, witness intimidation, gang influence, courtroom strategy, wrongful convictions, and the corruption Gregg says he encountered from inside the justice system.
We also dive into the true double-murder case behind his book, Convergence—a case that was solved within days but took four years to reach trial as witnesses disappeared, fear took hold, and alleged courtroom corruption complicated the pursuit of justice.
After prosecuting more than 60 murders, does Gregg still believe the justice system works? And what has he seen behind closed courtroom doors that the average American never knows about?
Follow me down the rabbit hole with former homicide prosecutor Gregg Owen.
