Australia has just passed one trillion dollars in government debt, and combined state, territory and federal debt is set to hit two trillion by the end of the decade. On this episode of The Quicky, we ask why nobody seems worried: from ballooning state budgets since COVID to the "free" election promises being made ahead of the Victorian and NSW polls. Experts from the Grattan Institute and the Centre for Independent Studies explain why debt feels abstract to voters, and why the bill always seems to land later.
