Show full transcript 1:01 From when I started like 20 I had no kids to when I'm now married with six kids 1:06 and mortgages and life, you know, 1:08 you kind of juggle it around and just balancing act. 1:11 So that's what a big shift. 1:13 20 single wild man just out there fighting. 1:16 And now here you are, six kids, mortgage, businesses, 1:21 like you got this supplement thing you're doing now 1:23 with Musashi, you got your own supplement line. 1:26 So it's a lot of work, man. 1:28 It's a lot, a lot of activity, 1:29 a lot of things going on, a lot of balls juggling. 1:32 You gotta stay busy though, right? 1:35 there's like idle hands especially yeah and you get is like when it's like 1:41 with performing performance sports and like the the guillotine's kind of 1:45 always over your head right you just kind of always got to stay busy keep 1:49 moving like a shark always just kind of drown for sure especially in combat 1:54 sports especially consider the fact that even in the the the outlier and you 2:00 only have a certain amount of time like the true outliers in the sport I 2:03 I think one of the true outliers in the sport right now is Jared Canoneer 2:07 He's one of the outliers because that dude is how old is he now? 41 42? 2:14 somewhere how old is Jared Canoneer young Jamie? 2:20 42 still shredded like like anybody's business 2:24 Still works out like a fucking demon still has insane cardio and drive still wins fights in the trenches 2:32 Yeah, like that fight with Gregory Rodriguez. He was getting blasted in that first round. It looked bad 2:38 Yes, comes on wins it in the trenches and stops him even when he loses. It's not like not by much 2:44 Yeah, it's not much at all like when he lost to Robo 2:49 cop 2:51 It was like when did he lose to him? Did he lose to him because he just beat him 2:55 Yeah 2:56 Yeah, because Gregory Rodriguez is Robocop, so he just stopped him recently 3:01 He was getting beaten up in the first round and Robocop is one of those guys 3:05 It was like a kind of controversial stoppage. I forget who it was 3:11 Oh, I know who you're talking about it wasn't him it was 3:17 God, what was the hmm? What was the one that I think it was ememov? 3:22 You may maybe I think he move all was the cut go back to that place 3:26 He had since then and that's the one that's in my head fresh 3:30 Yeah, I don't remember the one that was a controversial stoppage. I'm pretty sure it was him of all 3:38 90% sure Michael page is a bad fight for him 3:42 Yeah, that was a bad fight 3:44 Michael yes, that's it. It's the most annoying guy to fight ever. Oh dude. Well, first of all 3:52 When he was at one I think 170 is really his weight class, and he's also another guy. That's like he's 3:58 40 now or 39, you know when he was at 170 fucking good luck 4:03 Good luck even touching that cat too fast too fast too much speed at 185 too. Yeah, he did 4:09 Well, I think the thing about 185 though is the grapplers 4:13 Yeah, they get a hold of him. It's just a different world 4:16 Yeah, you know because that's the only guy that ever beat him in the UFC was Ian Gary and the way 4:21 did it was by grappling yeah you know and just kind of striking setting up his 4:26 shots a little bit he's just I've always said I said it from early on that I 4:30 think that that's a missing link in MMA is point fighting these guys who really 4:35 know how to do that style and then learn the other things because that style 4:40 is so it's you cover so much distance so quickly and they're so good at 4:46 avoiding shots and then leaping in and they're so good at timing and 4:49 Scoring and if you could score with one shot like those guys do they leap in and score with one if you're a good combination 4:57 Fighter once you connect once then the other shots can flow from that if you develop that style on top of that 5:05 original point fighting style a hundred percent and 5:07 Like the huge factor in all this is like they're such small gloves. Yeah, can stop you 5:13 Yep, like that's all you need and that's kind of being my approach with how I my fight style is just to be fast 5:19 Be fast just get just land my hands 5:22 Well, you have a very similar style in a lot of ways like you're very wide stance 5:26 You have a lot of you blitz a lot you leap in and leap out very fast and agile 5:31 Yeah 5:31 I feel like that's a great style also to like avoid the like some of these fights some guys like you see these fights 5:37 Where they just like fucking stand right in front of each other and some guys thrive on it out 5:43 You know, it's like that's that's their thing. 5:45 They like to just stand in the pocket and blast it out. 5:47 But for how long? 5:49 I know. 5:50 You know, and tell me if you think he's an outlier, 5:53 as well as that King Green. 5:54 Oh, God. 5:56 Super outlier. 5:57 Because, like, I wasn't on his wagon, 5:59 but then then he changed his name. 6:01 He's like, he started going downhill and like everyone was like, 6:03 OK, he's going to just fade into obscurity. 6:05 You know, let's leave it as that. 6:06 He changes his name, starts piecing people up. 6:08 Yeah. 6:09 So he's like TKO's. 6:10 And you're like, he's back. 6:11 I'm so back. 6:12 40. 6:13 Yeah, I know he's well. He just has a real love of the game. He really does love fighting 6:18 Again, it was a vision fighter. Mm-hmm, right and weird style hands down 6:23 Yeah, and you think he's there and the punches are coming at weird angles 6:26 Yeah, he's popping you from all sorts of and talking shit the entire time like I can't believe this guy's talking shit to me 6:33 I've never understood guys that they can do that like Holland 6:40 He was doing some research for the next card, and he was setting up a basketball game. 6:47 One of the guys, he was fighting, like, it just blows my mind. 6:53 I don't know how you can get in the headspace, because when I'm in there, I'm on the roller 6:56 coaster of pain, like, I'm just angry. 6:59 Well, he's having fun, and, you know, you said something interesting last night. 7:03 You said like a happy Robert is fucking dangerous Robert. Yeah, we were talking about Carlos protest and now Carlos protest 7:11 Looks like he's always having fun in there. He's so relaxed 7:14 Yeah, and we were talking about his time in Thailand when he moved there and he essentially had over the course of like something 7:21 Like six years. He had a hundred Muay Thai fights. Yeah, and kickboxing fights, which is 7:25 Crazy, that's wild but Muay Thai is so damaging on the body. Oh, it's hell. Yeah 7:31 But because of that, he developed this very loose, 7:37 like relaxed style, like very aggressive, 7:40 but also just very comfortable inside of the octagon. 7:43 Yeah, like he doesn't get that kind of fight or flight 7:46 response anymore. 7:47 He just turns up and he's just accustomed to it. 7:51 You're losing that in that space. 7:53 But because everyone's waiting, I guess not everyone. 7:56 It's like everybody that, I don't know how to phrase it. 7:59 It's like everybody everybody that doesn't drink and smoke before a fight is waiting for it to catch up with him 8:05 I guarantee my side of drinking smoking before a fight. I'm gone 8:15 Within seconds within seconds. I'm gassing on the walk out 8:21 Yeah, that guy parties. Yeah, I mean he's smoking cigarettes the day of the fight the locker room 8:27 People are like, you can't smoke back here. 8:31 That's crazy, that's a crazy, like your C-stuff must be bewildered, like just to see the same. 8:39 And he's like, I think he said in one of his interviews, I trained really hard for this fight, 8:42 I haven't drank for two weeks or something like that, I was like good effort man, commitment. 8:48 I wonder how much of an edge that takes off of you physically versus what it gives you 8:54 psychologically to just be able to chill out every night. 8:57 Yeah, I guess that's the what we were discussing last night. What's the balance the tipping point for that? 9:02 It's like whilst he's happy and he's loose and limba and you know, he feels invincible 9:09 Like there are detrimental effects to all this stuff. He's yeah, I don't but but then fighting is a funny sport 9:16 Isn't it though because it's like it's not like 9:19 Sprinting where you build up this machine to run at your maximum 9:24 them. There is so many variables working against you. And like how many times are we saying just 9:30 nobodies out of shape dudes just come in and but know how to throw a punch and just win by 9:36 starching people. Yeah, it's like this. Yeah, it's just a funny sport. This show is presented by 9:42 DraftKings. Think DraftKings isn't available in your state. Yeah, that's crazy 12:59 And it happens it happens too too often. Yeah 13:04 Especially with the little gloves. Yeah, and I'm like and then I'm sweating and grinding away trying to get better 13:10 And you get these guys that can just turn up and just just touch of death people. Yeah 13:14 Well, there's that too. That's that's interesting because you're a power puncher. You're a power kicker 13:19 But there's like there's people that have a weird power, right? 13:23 It's like it doesn't even like Pereira the ghani power. Yeah in Ghana or um, you know, uh, there's a 13:30 Damian penis, you know that dude 13:33 Yes, yes, that's oh bug. Yeah 13:37 Crazy power 13:39 Yeah, that you refight. Mm-hmm that last you refight blown out leg. Oh my goodness and Yuri 13:45 oh 13:46 My goodness Yuri needs a psychologist 13:49 He needs someone to talk to him and say, 13:51 we have to have strategies. 13:52 Okay, you're a seek and kill fighter. 13:55 When a guy's hurt, you can't be upset that he's hurt 13:58 and then try to give him some concessions. 14:00 It was like he was part of an anime. 14:02 I don't like, he was in his own show of like, 14:06 and there was rain in the background in his head. 14:08 There was like rain in the background, 14:10 and his mud and his sweat, thunder, lightning. 14:14 He wasn't there. 14:15 And then he, like, hit him with that touch of death 14:18 He's got in that left hook man. That left hook is a whip. Yes, such a whip man 14:23 And what's really crazy is that is the only punch that's available if your other leg is blown out 14:28 Yeah, it's the only punch. Yeah, cuz you can pivot off that leg. Yeah, I mean it's kind of crazy if you really think about 14:35 He's got one option. Yeah 14:36 Yeah, he's got he's got one option and he just 14:41 So he's still moving around pretty decent even when the fucked up leg 14:45 But then you see it like as he gets leg kicked. He stumbles back 14:49 He just can't move when he want like when he wants to move and he can control it 14:54 He's fine, but it's like chaotic defensive movements back and forth where you're you know, you're shifting oddly on your legs 15:01 That's where a blown-out ACL really fucks you. Yeah, is it his right leg or his left leg that was fucked up in that fight 15:07 I want to say he's left. I think it's his right because that would make sense 15:12 That's why you can throw the left hook. 15:14 Because he can still pivot off that leg. 15:18 Yes. 15:19 Oh, you see? 15:20 Yeah, it's his right leg. 15:22 But then, like, even when Yuri backs into the fence, 15:25 like, Carlos has one punch there. 15:27 Yeah, that's it. 15:28 One punch. 15:28 Just the left hook. 15:30 One punch. 15:31 Right here, you can see, like, Yuri's. 15:34 And Yuri's still in that space. 15:36 Oh, there it is. 15:38 Well, Yuri in that, like, maybe I'm thinking about it 15:42 differently because in that moment so that's post the injury when Yuri realized he had the injury but in that moment 15:48 It did look like Yuri was moving in for the kill 15:50 But you just you can't throw caution to the wind with a guy like Carlos because Carlos Holbert could just start you 15:57 One point. Yeah, that's where he blew his leg out. You see this is right. You see it go. Yeah wobble 16:03 Yeah, you see it like vibration through it. That's horrible. That's especially I think very like 16:10 It's super vital as a light heavyweight as well like the power of light heavyweights 16:15 And that's that was my headspace moving in from middleweight. It's like everyone's got touch of death 16:20 Right, it's why the fights like a lot of light heavyweight fights are out because they're still fast 16:25 still fast enough to land, but they just heavier guys right bigger punches and 16:30 You just can't play games like that 16:33 There's only a few guys that are like smaller like Merzakhanov's a good example of a guy's been real successful 16:38 Yes, as a light heavyweight as a smaller guy Azama. Yeah, Azama. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. The guy that lost to Costa 16:45 Yeah, I didn't see this weekend. Yes. Yeah. Yeah against Reyes. Small guy. Is he really 5'10? 16:50 Yeah, he's small for a light heavyweight and and doesn't look ripped like he carries a lot of but so skillful 16:58 Yes, he's so slick man and he's aggressive with his shots 17:02 When you see Paulo Costa fight him at light heavyweight, you're like, Jesus, how come 17:05 Paulo Costa wasn't a light heavyweight the whole time? 17:08 That's a guy where it just completely made sense, where he went up to light heavyweight. 17:11 I'm like, you look like a light heavyweight, man. 17:13 Especially with the few times he lost, he missed weight and was struggling for weight 17:18 cuts and stuff. 17:20 I feel like for a long period there, he was kind of finding his feet. 17:23 And then he found his feet just in time to fight me. 17:26 And he came out like with super cardio and like super quick 17:32 Yeah, that was a great fight. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. I got spinning heel kicked 17:35 That was great 17:36 But you you were one of the few dudes that I've ever seen get spinning heel kicked and survive it 17:41 You know, like that's a crazy kick to get cracked with. Oh, yeah, I'll take it 17:48 Yeah, that's that's a funny kick too because 17:52 like it's so hard to prepare for because it's not a kick you can for one it's 17:56 not it's not a kick he throws very often right you know and and it's not one 18:00 you can really train in in the workroom right it's like because you can't train 18:05 it full clip you can't pull it yeah and how you gonna you can't pad it up or 18:08 it's like that right yeah it's and even I remember I remember being in 18:14 there and seeing him start to that that turn and there's that one split second 18:21 because I've never seen it before when I'm like what's going on and then my legs 18:26 are going to doing funny funny things so there's a moment where Michael Venom 18:31 Page was talking about this crazy training partner that he has this guy 18:34 who was like elite in the gym but never quite could put it together in the 18:39 cage and he's in he's just sparring with him and there's this weird 18:43 moment where he's like what is he doing and he realized he's doing a front flip to an axe kick and 18:51 As he's realizing it. He just instinctively does that and 18:56 blocks it 18:57 But it just completely on instinct like how why would you be expecting a guy to do a front flip to an axe? 19:04 It's like a rolling thunder dude, but it's it's great now 19:07 That's like a wheel kick, but it's similar but with this guy doesn't he does it to a heavy bag 19:11 Do you remember that guy's name, Jamie? 19:16 There's a video of him doing it. 19:18 Well, that's similar. 19:20 That's Miguel Torres early in his UFC. 19:23 That's who that is, right? 19:25 I guarantee you, if someone does this kick to me, 19:27 I'm taking it straight between the eyes. 19:30 But this guy did it and do it with a roll. 19:33 That's it. 19:34 Michael Venepage was talking about that guy. 19:37 That this guy, the way he could do it, 19:40 he could do it on the bag 19:41 And like hit the bag train with a front flip axe kick and I mean who the fuck can do that, man? 19:50 Like I'm I'm blowing up both hands both hamstrings trying to do this. This is not available 19:58 Yeah, it does 20:01 There's a video that he should there it is. There's the guy he lands on his feet. Yes, dude watch that 20:07 It's like a string fighter move. It's doesn't seem like it's a real. Yeah 20:11 It doesn't seem like anybody could do it fast as fuck dude fast as fuck and the dude lands it 20:18 Look at that. It lands it as an axe kick. Yeah, and he practices it on the back. I'm taking that straight between the eyes 20:27 No way luckily for me. I don't think anyone in the light heavyweight division is gonna be doing that stuff 20:32 There there's the dude's name 20:34 Glorbo Fondo. Well, watch this guy. He's so fucking athletic, man. This is literally crazy. 20:41 Wow, he actually, he, oh god, these fucking pop-ups. Fuck off with your pop-ups. I mean, 20:49 I, there's levels, right? Like, I've always said that if you can get someone who's a gymnast 20:54 and teach them, there he is right there, you can see it again. Watch, watch how he does this, 20:59 This fucking crazy 21:02 Yeah, it's so crazy 21:04 It was what's crazy like he lands and still lands on his feet. Oh, yeah, like a cat 21:09 Yeah, lands perfectly and then slides back into a perfect stance. Yeah, it's nuts. My knees are hurting watching me 21:17 Dude, I hurt my back in the shower today 21:20 I worked out I worked out I hit the bag a punch the bag kick the bag had his great work 21:25 I didn't got a sauna for 20 minutes stretched out feeling great. Yeah got in the shower taking a shower before the podcast 21:35 Doing that's something like in between my shoulder blades doing nothing just fucking washing my 21:46 I I'm still a professional 21:50 I'm so I'm gunning for that title 21:52 Like I'm gunning for the title. So I picked up I picked up one of my kids and I felt like a twinge in my lap 21:57 I'm like, oh 21:59 You just age age creeps up on you think draft Kings isn't available in your state 22:04 Think again the cage is set and draft Kings keeps the full card at your fingertips in one sports app live in all 50 22:12 States once the cage door closes everybody has a pick draft Kings keeps you close to the pay-per-view card from the first 22:19 to the final horn. I blew my hands 24:26 15 is getting a bit old to like they getting faster than that 24:31 Light 24:33 Boys are all under 11 still, so I don't need the full warmup, you know, but it's yeah 24:40 That's you know, I need a full hamstring warm-up stretch out before I remember reading that Muhammad Ali would he would warm up for a 24:49 Full hour before his workouts. Yeah, he had a whole system that he did and one time 24:55 I did this thing was Daniel Tosh for his TV show where I like trained him to take a punch from Manny Pacquiao 25:01 Manny was being nice. He didn't really hit up. He kind of like just came a little thump 25:06 But anyway, we're in the boxing gym, and I got to see Manny work out 25:09 Yeah, and he spends a crazy amount of time warming up. Yeah, there's all these like band workouts that he does 25:15 Everything is like very systematic. They're stretching and moving him. He doesn't just get out there 25:21 He starts real slow gets everything warmed up and I think I've said like you can get men mesmerized watching his warm-up 25:29 Mm-hmm, and then I think also his his ab program. Have you seen his ab program never stops 25:35 I'm like a ten crunches and I'm alright cuz 25:39 Cause if I'm getting body shot and I'm not wearing it, it doesn't matter how strong your abs are, you're going down. 25:43 Bro, he's a very unusual guy. 25:45 He's an outlier as well. 25:46 Yeah, in a lot of ways. You know, he's a really good pool player. 25:50 Is he? 25:50 Oh yeah, like a professional level pool player. 25:53 I love hearing like quirky like super talents. 25:55 Yeah. 25:56 Well, you know, pool is gigantic in the Philippines. 26:00 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 26:00 And you know, I mean it is way bigger than it is in America. It's everywhere. 26:05 And he has his own pool hall in his compound. So he's a compound in his home 26:10 I mean a full pool hall with like 15 tables and all these people running around and everyone's playing and they're gambling all over the place 26:17 Everyone's gambling. They're all gambling and while he's playing. This is so crazy 26:21 So he's playing pool and while he's playing while his opponent shooting 26:25 He's signing autographs. He has people just bring him shit to sign so they could sell it 26:29 It's like boxing gloves pool pool cues posters. He's signing things. It's your shot man 26:34 He goes over in place and then he's playing a game of chess 26:38 So he's got a game of chess going on who's sitting down playing chess 26:42 He makes his move his opponent makes his move runs over runs a few balls runs over between that signing things down 26:48 This is exactly his room 26:50 So look he's got his chessboard. That's right by the pool table 26:55 Then he's making shots and then he goes and sits down and then in the middle of that he's signing things it though 27:02 It's fucking insane to watch man. I'm getting anxiety watching. He's just constantly 27:08 Moving and the poor room is just filled with people. They're all moving around, but he plays real good 27:14 Yeah, like real good. You know, he's turning up with a glove 27:18 Don't bet on that table, but it's like he knows how to play 27:21 It's not just like pocketing balls like he gets excellent position, but like I said pool in the Philippines is gigantic 27:27 It's like it's a huge sport and he's you know deeply involved in it 27:32 Like he has his own pool hall that's in the Philippines like a huge place 27:37 And you know they do a big pool tournament with him every year and where does he get the time again? 27:43 And then he still works out full time. Yeah, we still works out like he's still trying to fight 27:48 I think he boxed this year didn't he he did yeah, and he's trying to fight someone like world-class right now 27:53 He's trying to get like a real like world-class fight instead of like fighting 27:57 You know you think when a guy gets into his late 40s probably, you know, I have some like like Mayweather's doing yeah 28:03 Yeah, he fights influencers MMA fighters shit like that. Yeah, not many man. He's looking to get another world-tider fly 28:12 yeah how like why not I guess yeah I mean I guess he just never lost whatever it 28:18 is if you're playing pool and chess at the same time yes that guy's brain is 28:23 not a stretch and super accommodating like signing all these autographs for 28:28 people like everybody's running over to him with boxes of shit for him to sign 28:32 so they could go sell it I'm so I was I'm surprised at how many fighters in 28:37 general like chess. I know it's a tactical, it's a strategy, but it's just, it surprised 28:42 me like the guys like, I'll go to the gym and I'll train with some of the boys and they 28:47 are just, they are ogres with gloves on. You know what I mean? But then in their downtime, 28:55 they're just playing online chess and they're ranked like high. And I'm like, dude, you're 29:01 knucklehead I saw you open a can of spam for lunch what are you doing and it 29:09 just surprises me you can't always tell you like judge a book by its cover right 29:13 absolutely yeah I've thought about getting you to play chess no don't okay 29:17 yeah I thought about getting into it and then I went on like a deep rabbit hole 29:21 of like the game of chess and the artist strategy and all that and I realized 29:25 like there's just too much to learn right it's like the first 20 moves or 29:29 something like that are already like in motion like everyone knows at a decent 29:33 decent clip everyone knows the first 20 moves because that's what you're supposed 29:36 to do right and then everyone starts going off on different things and I'm 29:39 just like oh too much for me it's a long road and if you get addicted to it that's 29:46 gonna suck up all your time because you could just hop online and play 29:49 people at any or your phone what you do any time of the day you could play 29:53 the computer you could play real people so it's just two nuts yeah yeah but 29:57 It's just but I get it. I really do get it. I understand it and you could like really 30:04 Underestimate someone's intelligence just based on what they look like they just look like a giant brute like you ever talked to Josh Barnett 30:11 No, I haven't former heavyweight champion one of the smartest people I've ever met 30:15 Super smart quotes Dostoevsky 30:18 Like he's like off the top of his head. He's he's he's quoting these great works of literature and studies warriors and 30:27 Yeah, studies history knows a lot about whiskey makes his own whiskey like brilliant guy. Yeah, and you know you look at him 30:34 So this is fucking brute. Who's really into pro wrestling? 30:38 Really? Well the athletic side of that sport is just oh nuts unbelievable 30:44 No, these these guys are elite athletes right like because you have to be otherwise you kill yourself 30:50 And those guys are taking a pounding that people don't recognize because they're on the road 30:55 You know hundreds of days a year doing these shows in these local stadiums 31:00 So these people come out to see them and they're doing these big pro wrestling shows 31:03 But you don't no one thinks about the fact like that's real damage. Yeah, you're getting body slammed 31:09 You're getting a concussion probably you're definitely getting some CTE 31:13 100% yeah, and then they hop on the bus and they go to the next state and do it again 31:19 Right over do it again right over the fucking bridge 31:23 It's crazy. It's so hard on the body all the old-school progress was that I've brought in here to talk to they're all fucked up 31:30 Yeah, well before he died Hulk Hogan, I met him once years ago 31:37 Like I didn't meet him, but I said hi to him outside of a cigar bar in Beverly Hills 31:42 It was fucking gigantic huge. I met him again 31:45 We did my pot well 31:45 I met him another time when I interviewed him for spike TV 31:48 Who's only slightly smaller than and then I met him again when he did my podcast 31:52 He was significantly smaller because he keeps getting these fusions on his back, right? 31:57 So he's had like 32:05 About this base, that's why old men shrink, you know 32:09 The one of the reasons why you shrink is you're losing disk space. That's why 32:13 I've gotten shorter over the years. 32:15 Yeah, you get disk decompression. 32:19 You know, it's called the disk degeneration disease. 32:23 But what it really is, is just pressure. 32:25 It's just all that weight, especially for weight lifters. 32:28 They all have disk compression. 32:30 So his thing was he would jump up in the air 32:32 and drop down on his ass. 32:35 He would land on his ass and elbow you. 32:37 So all that weight, 300 plus pounds, boom, 32:41 on his ass every night. 32:42 Boom his whole spot is going. Yeah 32:46 Like so he had to get his whole back 32:48 His whole back was one rod in in recent years. Have you fallen to your ass at any point like I'm prepared 32:57 Lay there for a while. I feel it all the way up to the top of my base of my skull 33:02 Yeah, that's not good. I can't imagine what sort of damage. Well, I can imagine you can see it 33:07 Those guys all get fused up. Yeah. Yeah, they all do it's just there's there's no getting 33:12 Right Kurt Angle was here. His whole neck is just yes. Yo Romero. Yo Romero's neck is fused to his skull 33:20 Another outlier dude you told me that when you fought him that you said it was like kicking metal 33:25 It's I've never felt that way. I've never thrown a calf kick and come off second best 33:30 like I 33:31 Calf-kicked him and that was the last coffee guy did he didn't check it 33:35 It just hurt. It just hurt. He's just he's built 33:41 Different he's just built different. His body is just built different. That's why he's how old is he for? 33:47 49 49 he just had a bare knuckle fight with Darren till and he should have won props to Darren till 33:56 And he got dropped to yeah, it's just yeah big fan of till big fan of till I think he's doing great 34:02 I think he's found his niche 34:04 I think he's had knee issues like significant knee issues over the years that are really fuck with them when it comes to 34:09 Grappling yeah, and I think you know what we got to see in his best in the UFC 34:16 Like the Cowboy Saroni fine is his striking his striking is very elite 34:21 Oh, it's he moves really well, and I think because of the knee issues boxing is just a way better choice 34:27 Yeah, you know taking into account the grappling. Yeah, you're not getting kicked in the knees 34:30 You know, it's just I just think his knees are pretty fucked up 34:33 I think that's why you see a lot of like the older guys that that 34:37 weren't really taking advantage of wrestling wise earlier in the career but 34:41 as they get older they start like they start getting taken down held by 34:46 decision or take taken put on their back and kind of submitted there or kept 34:50 there and I think that's because I know this firsthand I can still do it 34:55 because I've just been lucky really but and genetically like that that's a 35:01 thing people don't realize like a hundred hard work hard work will get you 35:05 very very far but there is like talent and genetics are a factor hundred percent 35:10 John Jones is the ultimate merging of talent and genetics like yeah exactly 35:14 like you can't if you were gonna build someone in a lab yeah intelligence and 35:22 genes yeah like all those together he's he's the perfect fighter yeah the 35:27 perfect fire but up but yeah I think as like as you get older you your knees 35:32 Your joints start hurting injuries are more prevalent. You can't wrestle on the mats anymore as much as you see 35:37 You don't have that mat time right so that when you get in there with these younger guys 35:40 And they take you down or they start pushing on the wrestling you just you're just not there for it 35:46 right and I think I also think that a 35:49 Big part of wrestling is what you do in the first 35:52 Second of the engagement of the takedown. It's like how that fighting like that that fight 35:58 That's why you see a lot of young fighters that aren't don't have a huge pedigree in wrestling 36:02 But they get out of positions that keep fighting 36:04 They work their way back up because they're fighting and fighting and fighting 36:07 Which is another thing that kind of dims a little bit as you get older. Yes, you know I mean 36:12 I think there's also the protecting of your joints, right? 36:16 Whereas you're young you just explode into things when you're older if you've had a few meniscus surgeries or an ACL 36:23 Reconstruction, you don't explode into things haphazardly anymore 36:27 You think you think about you can't yeah, you think about it 36:30 You position yourself before you push off even just instinctively you don't trust your knee subconsciously whereas you're young 36:36 You just fucking move you're thinking about your knees. You're scrambling. You're trying to get up 36:40 You're fucking you're not thinking of ever protecting yourself. Yeah, whereas you get a few surgeries 36:45 You get a few blown out joints you start protecting yourself 36:48 Yeah, and then there's these certain moments where you like look I could explode but I might not get the best out of it 36:52 Let me take a break here 36:54 Let me go to my back and try to work myself back in a position to stand up again. Yeah 36:58 And that's where the problems come by that's how you get held down for the rest of the round and raise that round or 37:03 Drickus, Drickus and Hamzat. Yeah 37:05 like that was one of the crazy examples of the gap in wrestling like it was gigantic and 37:12 Hamzat was the absolute like worst case scenario opponent for him. I I 37:21 people don't 37:22 give it that fight and what what what what Chamiah did to Drickers enough like thought or space 37:30 because that was unbelievable in a championship level fight to hold down someone like Drickers who 37:37 couldn't do anything and he couldn't do anything and he's a big strong guy at the worst case you 37:42 just flop around and push someone you know right but he just kept getting put in that crucifix 37:46 and how he's down like taking advantage of it was wild. When was the last time you saw 37:51 Someone in a championship fight defending their world title get put in the crucifix three fucking times 37:57 Never never it's such a hard move to get a guy in in the first place to get a guy in three times 38:02 Yeah, and a guy who's a fucking bulldog like trick is that guy's huge and it's not even it wasn't like it was just in the first round 38:09 I just kept doing it 38:11 Throughout the whole fight the things are getting sweaty people are getting tired 38:14 Yeah, he still just kept getting pretty I can I can barely hold people in a crucifix and a gi 38:22 to do it at that like there then that's this episode is brought to you by eight 38:28 sleep there are so many people out there who swear by the pod by eight sleep the 38:32 smart mattress cover that goes on your existing mattress but have you been on 38:37 the fence now's the time to get on board why because they've just released pod 38:42 six I'm gonna make it real simple for you here are the pod six headline 38:47 upgrades. Yes, like you know that dude. I just got cut Fareed Basherot 40:29 Yes undefeated. Yeah undefeated got cut and last time I talked to him was inside the octagon 40:35 It was the last fight of his queries like you know, I was like I'm sure you're gonna get another contract 40:39 Like I think I said that to him in the octagon because he was saying it's his last one. He's undefeated in age well 40:45 I I don't like that. I don't like that thinking that you have to be uber excited 40:52 He's got a brother as well, right? I believe and I'm not sure is that the Freed Basher out? 40:58 See if he has a brother brother as well if that's the the guy's very skillful 41:03 Yeah, obviously, he's undefeated and they just decided that they didn't like his style 41:08 that yeah yeah oh he's a PFL fighter okay that's why they just decided I don't 41:16 okay I'm talking out of school I didn't talk to Dana or Sean Shelby or Mick 41:20 Maynard I don't know what happened I don't know but I didn't like it I don't 41:26 like when a guy gets cut that wants to keep fighting in the UFC he's undefeated 41:30 just because you think he's born well put him in with someone who's fucking 41:34 Exciting yeah, put him in with someone who pushes him and makes it a crazy fight 41:38 Yes, like if a guy's fighting and winning you keep fighting and keep winning 41:42 Yeah, like are we saying that Hamzok can't fight in the UFC anymore because of the trickest fight where he won the title? 41:48 Which a lot of people thought was boring. Yeah, I didn't think it was boring, but a lot of people thought was boring 41:52 Yeah, brother had the it wasn't undefeated. I don't think but had the same issue in February one and yeah 41:58 Yeah, yeah with the UFC. Yeah with the UFC maybe so he had one fight 42:01 I don't know how many I think you had a few in the UFC. Yeah, he won through Dana White's contender series and had a few fights 42:07 Man, I don't like that. Yeah 42:11 I don't like guys not getting offered contracts because they don't like their style 42:16 You're everyone's trying to win. You're trying to win a fight fights are fucking 42:22 complicated this idea that you're supposed to just be entertaining and put your brain on the line and 42:29 Ignore your skill set. Ignore your skill set, which is to avoid damage and to fight intelligently. No end engage 42:35 No when your gas tank is on E and you got to play it off a little bit move around a little bit 42:40 Well, let your body recover like 42:42 This is what the game is. It's winning if you're looking at your contracts as well 42:47 It's like that to show and to win bonus like you you get more money winning, right? 42:51 Right like that. Good point. Very good. That's the whole thing if I could toast not my way to victory 42:57 I would. I would. 42:59 Like, if I could do what Chamaev does, 43:03 like, sometimes I'm jealous of these guys. 43:05 They just can just wrestle. 43:07 And just because they take no damage, no damage. 43:10 And they just take people down and destroy them there. 43:13 And then the longevity of that is much longer 43:17 until, like, that curse hits them 43:19 where they can't get a takedown. 43:21 And then they never get a takedown again. 43:23 Yeah, I think that curse is probably 43:24 what we're talking about, too. 43:26 Like a build-up of injuries and all these things over time like oosman right here's a guy that that stopped taking down 43:32 So he's an example of injuries as well. Very good example of injuries 43:35 However, he did beat Joaquin Buckley. He did and Joaquin Buckley 43:40 Fucking dangerous as hell man, and especially then and Joaquin was on the rise. Yeah, you see the Mike Mallott victory 43:48 Yes, that was cool. Yeah, that was cold. Shit. That was cold. Mallott looks good, dude 43:54 Yeah, he looks it's crazy that that dude started his career at featherweight. Really? Yeah 43:59 Well, yeah, it was a featherweight. I think 44:03 I think Ikeem Dawadou stopped him. He looked bigger than Joaquin. He did. Yeah. Yeah, he did 44:10 He's big and you know, he looks like a real 44:12 Well until you look at guys like Michael Morales, you know, okay 44:16 What's that? 44:18 This size is not he's not the main. He's like a special case. He's just like he is 44:23 the perfect example of weaponized physique. Yeah. Like he's just, he's young, he's 44:29 hungry, he's, he's a genetic freak. You can see it. He makes the sacrifices to get 44:35 to the weight division. He likes to fight. He can bang, he can wrestle, he can, 44:40 you know what I mean? He just, he's just there to scrap. That's a, that's an ugly 44:44 fight. And he's the biggest outlier in terms of weight, in terms of size. 44:47 Well another one was Atiba Gautier. He's another one that weighs 230. 231 was what he 44:56 weighed before he started his weight cut and he got down to 185. But he fought 45:00 Roman Kopilov and Kopilov stopped him in the first round. He's slick. Jack 45:07 Slack, who's a great MMA analyst on Instagram and YouTube and all that 45:12 He did a great breakdown of the positioning and you know how 45:17 Roman Kopylov was leading him into it and setting up shots and set up that left hook 45:22 There's a few guys who've done some great breakdowns, but it's so skillful man 45:25 Yeah, and that was like a good example of like a super powerhouse 45:29 Enormous guy who's gigantic for the weight class just gets pieced up by a guy who's just slicker 45:34 Yeah, and then coffee looks not like a 45:37 Physically intimidating dude, right? Like it kind of looks like a desk jockey. I know except for his nose 45:44 It's like you had a fight with a bear 45:47 That's jockey that visits a bar overnight 45:50 Destroyed but I mean that's just that was it was that it was that fight with 45:56 With Costa that I saw cost and I was like cost has found his feet. Mm-hmm. Yes 46:02 Like you just work in that body. Yeah, he's pissed him up. It's such a good when Costa is on 46:07 He's a motherfucker. I think he went through a dark time after the Izzy fight. I think the pressure of fighting for the title 46:16 I'm just speculating 46:17 Overwhelmed him obviously he had some injuries too because he had red suction marks all over his calf 46:22 Which is a real bad thing to go into the octagon with I mean put some makeup on that shit because is he sees that he's 46:29 Immediately kick that spot. He's a smart guy. Yeah, he's gonna go. Oh you got probably a calf like nobody gets the suction marks on the calf 46:37 And he just got pieced up so bad in that fight and stopped and then Izzy dry-humped him which was hilarious 46:44 And after that, I think he was mind-fucked for a while. Yeah, it was hilarious, but it was also like, oh, dude 46:50 It's so dirty so dirty. It's like this 46:54 It's it was cold man 46:56 like bled it 46:58 Too cold. I can't I can't be bad. I can't be I'm that bad that much like that's crazy 47:04 And like he's had a couple good ones like the the Pereira when he knocked out prayer that second time 47:10 Oh, yeah, and then the arrow. He that's got to be one of the coolest one of the sender 47:14 I think the greatest fight celebration of all time. Yeah, especially when you consider what just happened 47:20 Yeah, that dude had knocked him out two fights in a row 47:22 Yeah, two fights in a row and then he finally got in a fight where he was getting fucked up 47:27 Yeah, his leg was getting fucked up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he was not winning. His calf was getting destroyed 47:32 He's like this motherfucker already got me. He's I was thinking to myself damn this motherfucker already got my leg 47:37 He did he did that thing where he was wearing that leash 47:39 For the whole kid before the news he had that leash on him. Did he really? 47:45 He took it off just before he fought like 47:52 He's such a weeb sometimes. 47:54 I love the guy now. 47:55 We're good friends, but he's a weeb sometimes. 47:57 What was it like losing to him by knockout 48:01 and then coming back and taking him to the limit? 48:04 Because we were talking about this last night. 48:06 Your second fight, was it a split decision? 48:09 I'm not sure. 48:11 I'm not too sure. 48:11 It was a very close fight. 48:13 It was very close. 48:13 It was very close fight. 48:14 I feel like if they scored takedowns 48:16 like they used to back in the day, 48:19 I might have got my hand raised, but. 48:21 But yeah, takedowns don't mean as much anymore unless you do something with them. 48:26 You can win off your back if the guy on top doesn't do anything. 48:29 That's how Boss Root won the world title when he beat Kevin Randleman. 48:33 Kevin Randleman took him down, but Boss was fucking him up from his back, just elbowing 48:37 him, blasting him from his back. 48:39 It was very controversial because everybody's like, no, the guy on top, he's winning. 48:43 But Boss Root was doing mad damage from the bottom. 48:46 Yeah. 48:46 Like it's and you also see like some guys can generate like what about when Holland knocked out jacquera off the back 48:53 Oh, yeah, yeah, why reached up and hit him with the fucking right hook like hell. How do you generate enough power? 49:01 Every time I'm on my back, and I'm trying to fight up I get fed 49:05 I think I get fed and then I guess and then that's where I'm staying for the next four minutes or whatever 49:11 I've seen someone else knock someone out from their back to with a hook 49:16 God I forget who it was but he was in he was on top of someone or someone was on 49:21 top of them I don't remember if it's his guard or if he was mounted and he throws 49:27 a right hook and the guy just like sinks and falls on top of him like it is 49:31 possible yeah I've seen things that's why everyone loves this sport it's 49:37 because crazy stuff happens oh yeah like it is just it is just a melting pot 49:42 of athletes. 49:44 Like when Sean Shroff just knocked out Gable Stevenson. 49:48 Like in the first round with the first punch, like a 2400 to 1 underdog. 49:52 Yeah, that's crazy. 49:53 Minus 2400 underdog. 49:55 Yeah. 49:55 That's crazy. 49:55 Crazy. 49:56 And you know there were punters that put 10 bucks on. 49:59 Like just threw 10 bucks on. 50:01 100%. 50:02 And then there's laughing. 50:04 Absolutely. 50:05 He made a lot of people's days. 50:06 Minus 2400 is crazy. 50:08 And then he loses in 11 seconds. 50:10 I was I was 50:12 Thinking after I saw him fight the fight before like he was a bit reckless 50:16 With the ability to go in like in and especially in such like the big boys division. Yeah, like everyone's got touch of death there 50:23 Well, he's also a guy who I know he is a heavyweight 50:27 He I know he weighs like 240 or whatever he weighs, but you look at him 50:31 You're like that guy can make 205 like 100% 205 is not outside his wheelhouse. You don't think because he's he's 50:39 He's he's late. This is Kevin also. This was also a hook. It's the only one I can find he's talking to him while it's happening 50:44 Oh, he's always talking to people. He's the most thing I had this dream when I was 17 and then throws a hook and knocks him out 50:49 Is that what he said? I had a dream when I was 17 50:53 Is it on right now? Yeah, let me hear it. Put the headphones on 50:59 He said that was nice 51:09 I 51:20 Jack raise he was already badly hurt 51:29 It was the first punch had him fucked up. Yeah, and he didn't recover cuz he was he was there for for a minute 51:35 So it must not hurt him bad yeah, but then then that the rest of it was terrible to watch 51:40 Well, he said to Joaquin Buckley. He goes you got a booger on your nose and then he knocked him out 51:45 He's like hey, man. You got a booger on your nose and then pop. He gets someone straight right knocked him out 51:50 Yeah, I don't know what I do is someone was talking that much to me in a fight 51:54 Well Frank Shamrock had a fight with Nick Diaz and strike force and he said after the fight 51:59 He goes it's so fucked up because this guy is talking shit to you and you look 52:04 I can't believe he's doing this. I can't believe he's talking shit to me because he's 52:08 He's Frank Shermrock. He's a legend. He was former UFC champion like a real pioneer in terms of like a complete martial artist 52:15 He's like one of the very first. Yeah, like come started with boots on yeah, man 52:18 I mean he did the pancre style when you're open slaps 52:22 I mean he was a real pioneer so for him and Nick deals like what bitch what bitch would you go do bitch? 52:27 He's just popping him talking to him there. You don't get to breathe. Yeah, he's not hitting you full blast 52:32 Yeah, he like here put some and he I love how he used to put put his hands down by his yeah by his hips 52:41 He's just talking to him constantly 52:45 I I've always been the biggest fan of his style. Oh, it's just because of crazy style. It just looks 52:51 so much 52:53 Fun, it looks fun. He's relaxed like even while he's doing this 52:57 He's never straining. Yeah, like all of his punches are like 50% everything's 50% 53:01 But because of that he can throw them for days forever for days 53:06 And then and then he gets to that point where he's not even breathing and he just he's just beating on a guest 53:14 My favorite fight of him ever is Paul Semtex daily. Oh, yeah 53:18 Yeah in strike force for Semtex had maybe the craziest power in the history of the division 53:25 Semtex would just put people into orbit 53:28 He had like crazy knockouts and these dudes just went to war and he dropped Nick a couple of times 53:34 But Nick brought him into a pace where he was gonna have to sprint for the entire five minutes 53:39 Yeah, and by the end of like three minutes in you see he's like stuff 53:42 He's like I can't do this anymore. Yeah, and then Nick just overwhelms him and stops electric overload 53:47 Yes, if you can find that he's thought he had some he had some 53:51 Bring us up earlier in the fight 53:54 They were wrestling a little bit. Yeah, but in the beginning it's like you see the power of Semtex like crazy left hook 54:00 Left hook in a left uppercut would just put people into orbit just terrifying power and he's one of those guys with power 54:08 Oh, we were saying but like you're like you're born with it. I swear you're born with it 54:12 It's not like he's doing a gym workout like 54:15 Explosiveness routine you can certainly enhance your power 54:19 But I think the type of power that like Paul Daly has or you know, like a Thomas Hitman's hern type power 54:26 Or Deontay Wilder. He's the best example. Yeah, you're just born with that 54:30 Yeah, you got a gift from God. God gave you a gift to put people in the orbit 54:34 And this fight just is just this crazy example of his cardio 54:40 You know Nick Diaz is swam back from Alcatraz. I think seven times it might be more now 54:47 I remember seeing that like he's really big even during camps like really big in a triathlon. Yeah, like that's why how he stays fit 54:53 Like you you can't you can't get this or sustain this level of cardio unless cardio is your lifestyle 54:59 Yes, like this is this this at this point cardio is your hobby. Yeah, it's a different thing, right? 55:05 It's like Marab so he's not trying to blitz people ever 55:08 He's not trying to hit you with one big bomb and trying to he's just cooking you 55:12 Yeah, and he's he's bringing you up to a pace that he knows that you can't sustain but he does every day 55:18 Do you reckon that's what burnt him out because I swear it's got to be like 55:22 If every fight you turn up and you're like all right 55:25 Four rounds to go before before I got you like you know you got 20 minutes of cooking a guy 55:30 You know what I mean? Well, it could be that but it's also you got to take into consideration 55:35 All the years that he's been fighting. Yeah, so I've called Nick's first fight in the UFC in 55:42 in 19, no, 2001, I think? 55:47 2001, I'm pretty sure it was 2001. 55:50 I'm pretty sure that was the first time 55:52 I worked for the UFC in the new era. 55:54 You know, it was 97, I worked for the old era before Zufa. 55:57 And then it was him versus Robbie Lawler. 56:00 And he was like 20 years old. 56:02 Yeah, that was so good, such good. 56:04 He had some, he just got dropped there so bad. 56:07 It was 2003. 56:08 Okay, that's 23 years ago 56:14 That's crazy that is a long time to be getting punched in the head 56:17 Yeah, and I think that is a giant fact especially with his style 56:21 He's not was very much in your face. He's gonna eat a couple 56:24 But he's gonna give you four for every every one you land. Yeah, and he did a lot of sparring with what's that? 56:30 That back that was just the UFC he did 56:33 His first fight was August 31st 2001 56:37 for IFC Warriors and was 2003 what event was that? 56:43 Jeremy Jackson. No, what was the number UFC? 56:48 Does it say it I would have swore it was C44 UFC 44 and what what I 19 56:56 Sorry, September 26 2003. Okay. So that's his and that's Robbie Lawler. No, Jeremy Jackson. That was his first one 57:03 I was his next one 2004. Oh interesting. So Jeremy Jackson was a guy who stopped him earlier in his career 57:09 Who was a really good boxer? 57:13 Yeah, this is the end of it Paul just he just couldn't take it anymore and the pace is just fucking insane 57:18 He said doesn't stop it doesn't slow down 57:20 Yeah, but I think you know at a certain point in time 57:24 Everybody's time is up and yeah, you've been sparring with pro boxers for years and sparring hard for years and training hard 57:31 or fighting and getting in these crazy wars. 57:34 The type of fights, yeah, the type of fights that you're in. 57:36 Remember when he fought Anderson Silva 57:37 and he was getting bored, so he just laid down 57:39 and put his hands on his head like this. 57:42 Like, only he could do that. 57:45 It was awesome, only he could. 57:46 It was amazing. 57:48 I mean, it was like, even though he lost the fight, 57:51 I was like, that was fucking great. 57:53 It was so entertaining. 57:54 Yeah, yeah, it's like, 57:55 because he knew Anderson just wanted a counter strike 57:59 and just walked back on the fence, 58:00 so he just didn't engage. 58:01 Right and then nothing was happening. I know there was a few guys who figured that out with Anderson 58:06 Yeah, if you don't do anything, he doesn't do anything. Yeah, yeah, which is crazy 58:10 Yeah, and cuz cuz he during his prime is running through people before people worked it out before there was like a ton of tape on him 58:18 Before they they found that before also Anderson's age and the amount of fights he had caught up with him 58:22 He was untouchable. I was unstoppable Anderson in his prime was in the matrix. He was doing things to people 58:28 where you're like, this is, how is he doing it? 58:31 And it was like, he'd pull these spectacular techniques 58:34 out of nowhere, like V-Tour, that front kick to the face. 58:37 It was just like, my Lord, he was in the matrix. 58:41 He just saw things that other people couldn't see. 58:43 There was a time, and I always say that you have 58:46 to look at elite fighters in their absolute prime. 58:50 You can't look at them like BJ Penn later, 58:52 and he's my best example of that. 58:54 You can't look at the BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar fight 58:56 and say, that's BJ Penn. 58:57 No, you got to look at I mean later in his career, you know 59:00 You got to look at BJ Penn when he fought Shawn church 59:02 You know daddy Stevenson your BJ Penn when he was in his prime 59:07 You got to look at that and I feel like that's the same thing with Anderson 59:11 Don't look at him past the broken leg look at him before that when he was just starching everybody 59:16 Yeah, look at him before that would no one could even touch him and making it look easy easy like championship fights 59:22 Like finishing people easily. Yeah and having fun 59:25 Yeah, like having for the forest Griffin fight like he's having a good time. Yeah, it's like that was almost dirty, too 59:32 That's another dirty moment. So some guys are just cold-blooded 59:37 Just step back and pop them with the right hand. Yeah, and just like like on it kind of 59:43 Mockingly, yep, like dancing around didn't get told off once because he was he was mucking around that much 59:48 That was the Damian Maya fight. Yeah, Damian Maya fight. Well, I think there's another factor in that fight 59:54 So that fight was outside in Abu Dhabi, and it was hot and there was 60:01 Fucking bugs that were flying around the size of a horse 60:05 I didn't know that because I kind of imagine how annoying that would be it was weird 60:09 You guys get these weird Middle Eastern bugs like that you never saw before flying around like whoa the size of that thing 60:16 I was like this is crazy, and it was outside 60:18 So Anderson comes out hot in the first round like putting it to Maya trying to put Maya away 60:25 But he doesn't wind up putting him away 60:27 Yeah, and so I think he got really fucking tired 60:29 And I think he just decided to coast and then Maya was like kind of chasing after him 60:34 He was just getting out of the way and just doing enough to win a decision. Yeah, and Dana White was pissed 60:38 Yeah, they got real because this is like a big showcase fight. They're fight first of all 60:44 Even though the White House card was awesome. It was a lot of fun. It was great night. Don't have fights outside a world championship fight 60:52 Should be fought in a controlled environment. Yeah, it should be an air conditioned building 60:57 It should be at all. It should be a controlled environment that everyone fights in a world championship fight at the same way 61:05 It's a control. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, what was some variable exist? I wasn't there you were you were what are some variables? 61:11 We didn't see well one of them was humidity and gaichi talked about that 61:15 So there's thunderstorms all around us. Yes, the fight got delayed 61:19 Yes, the the fights got delayed and they thought they were gonna get delayed way later to like 10 30 p.m 61:25 But it wound up passing over us like literally like miraculously like literally circled around like 61:32 They might have done something 61:37 He might have done something 61:41 Yeah, if you really can manipulate the weather that would be a good time. So 61:46 There was that and Justin said that in the first round. He felt it. He's like you could feel the air was heavy 61:52 Yeah, that's a factor. It wasn't that hot like when they're fighting is in the 70s 61:56 I believe but 61:58 70s with humidity when you're going out it. Oh, yeah, that's not how it's supposed to be air conditioned environment 62:03 Should be the same way for every fight and that Abu Dhabi fight. It was not it was hot 62:09 I remember sweating in my shirt and we were outside and I was like these boys must be fucking. I'm like I'm like a I'm like a 63:12 heavy sweater like heavy heavy sweater like so whenever I do like a hard 63:19 session like if I have a big sparring day and do some rounds and it's hot 63:22 because in Australia humanities we live in it right if it's like a hot 63:27 day and it's humid by the second round I'll be dehydrated like I'll be cooked 63:34 like cooked you know gauge he doesn't drink water when he trains really yeah 63:39 you won't drink any water until after his training sessions over why he thinks it 63:45 toughens him up that's just how he's always done it he's super tough that's 63:52 Adorable motherfucker. I don't I don't know if that'll work for me. Hey, let's stop drinking water. Will it make me tougher? 64:01 I just die don't know if 64:04 But it's like what we're talking about earlier that this is balance. Yeah, I've been like drinking and smoking and having fun and being like 64:11 Fucking a marine. Yes. I don't know man. Yeah fighters 64:15 Why does a special be say like special animals like it's almost like I wish there was a Marvin Hagler 64:22 In MMA at the same time there's a Carlos protest. Yeah, let's see which way works best 64:27 Yes, you know you got two guys that are special athletes 64:30 But one of them gets up at five o'clock in the morning and screaming war and running up sand 64:35 Doon's with combat boots on in the middle of the winter. Yeah Cape Cod. That's Marvin Hagler 64:40 And he has Carlos protest. He's fucking dancing. I drink it 64:43 He's got a Marlboro and he's just going in there and fucking tuning people up 64:47 I don't know like an easily the last fight was rough to watch the Jack Della 64:53 Maddalena yes yes as a as a page hit Patriotic Australian sitting there 64:59 watching that fight was rough well as a fan of Jax it's hard to watch yeah he's 65:03 a great guy and he's an elite fighter but my goodness what Prates did to him 65:08 yeah like you said it best it was dirty yeah it was just dirty it was cold he 65:12 He was just, it was like an executioner at that point. 65:16 He's got that step in knee to the left side, 65:19 or from his left side into the liver. 65:21 God, that's so nasty. 65:23 He does that so well. 65:25 He's giving you all these different reeds. 65:27 And he gets so much range on it. 65:28 Yes. 65:29 Like it's, he's like, he fights almost in your face, 65:33 but he's not there. 65:34 Right. 65:34 He's not there. 65:35 And you go to come to him 65:36 and he just leans back and he's gone. 65:38 Yeah, and pops me from across the cage. 65:41 And then cough kicks you on the way out DC said it best we're talking about this last night DC said he's built like a mosquito 65:55 Power yes, the Leon Edwards left hand my goodness that left him cold 66:01 Covered distance with that shot to and he's so good man 66:05 Yeah, he is and he's so so excited to watch just like just like whoofie. Yeah, whoofie 66:11 This is like I know he lost to Armin 66:13 But did you see the one shot he threw from across the case like he covered like two meters? 66:17 Yeah, hit him in the eye. His eye blew up straight away. It was so like whoofie is dangerous 66:22 He's dangerous and long. It's just like Armin had the perfect strategy 66:27 The perfect strategy just get him up against the cage land elbows making and the way he like went for the single 66:33 You know, and then you know, he's like defending his head straight up in the air and boom 66:37 Yeah, some with 66:37 Caught him with one and he was like out cold and those held him up to hit him with the second. Yeah 66:44 Ammons I'm as a beast and rich. I 66:51 Really rich I don't know why like he's just he's he's my life my life sport my life blood 66:58 this earth for my family is his hobby. And it annoys me. It turns up at the highest level 67:09 to play. And it kills me. 67:13 And there's just always this narrative that we were told that rich people can't fight. 67:19 The rich guy's son is never going to be the toughest guy. It's always the poor 67:22 guys. He fights like he's poor. That's what's great. He fights like he grew up in 67:27 the ghetto yet or he he fights like he grew up a super soldier right you know 67:33 maybe he's on the other side of the spectrum maybe well maybe yeah he got 67:37 really good training very early on yeah and but also the thing is it's like in 67:42 him he loves it yes there's no way you could have the kind of money that that 67:47 guy has and fight that way unless you really love and get through a camp 67:52 right like there are too many moments during camp I'm like if this I need 67:56 This app to go well 68:06 Well, it's also it's like he does those Sam Colovito workouts. Do you know those? 68:11 No, I'm talking about okay, so this is guy who TJ Dillshaw credits with a lot of his strength and conditioning and the reason 68:18 Why he had such a crazy gas tank and Aaron Pico. He trains with them Hamza trains with him 68:23 He started how I started training with him fairly recently, but Sam Calvita 68:27 He comes from a cycling background and you know a real scientific approach to cardio. Yeah, and these guys do these 68:35 fucking insane 68:37 Cardio strength and conditioning workouts in a garage in California 68:41 So you got all these elite fighters in this, you know middle-class residential neighborhood guy fucking lifts up his garage door 68:48 He got these assassins on your fucking driveway doing like whipping chains and shit and doing all these crazy medicine ball workouts 68:56 Yeah, see if you can find some of that 68:58 They call it the garage. It's just what it's called the garage. Yeah, and this garage is just filled 69:04 With strength and cardio equipment, so they're all talking about it here. Yeah 69:10 Let me see if you can show some of the workouts 69:12 So is he gonna show it these guys are all cardiac machines. Yeah, and it's all in his okay. They're not that's not good 69:19 But I know from Armin's YouTube channel 69:22 He had a bunch of it where he was training with Hamzat at at Cala Vita's place. Yes along with a bunch of 69:29 One Archuleta was there one but bunch of like elite 69:33 MMA fighters are there training and 69:35 It looks like hell it looks like just complete holy hell cups once and had an interesting take on it though 69:42 Because Cub worked out there too and he said he feels like he had some of his worst performances when he did his cardio sessions there 69:49 And he thinks because he just takes too much out of you. He goes the guy just breaks you down too much 69:56 Yeah, he goes. There's like a fine line and I think he passes that line 70:02 So these things just just in the straight 70:03 I think the thing is though if you're just doing a cardio based sport like cycling 70:11 Yeah, you know obviously it's power and there's some technique to it 70:14 But it's not the same sort of give and take completely open-ended 70:19 You know improv improvising thing that MMA is yeah, so you can't just have cardio 70:27 You also have you have to have the ability to have all of those movements 70:32 Just razor sharp honed yeah all your skills razor sharp and 70:37 And sometimes when you're broken down from strength and conditioning, when you go to 70:41 do your skills, your skills feel sloppier. 70:44 They don't feel the same way. 70:46 You know, like I know, like when I used to work out at Carlson Gracie's place, one 70:51 of the things that I didn't like, no disrespect, but one of the things that I didn't like 70:54 is they put you through this grueling strength and conditioning thing before you would 70:59 do your skills. 71:00 And I was like, hmm, why would you want to be exhausted when you're learning something? 71:05 Yeah, I think it's a good thing if you're trying just trying to get in shape and have a real hard workout 71:09 And yeah, you should know what it feels like to wrestle tired 71:12 But also shouldn't you learn all this stuff when you're fresh? 71:16 Yeah, because the idea is not to gas right exactly and that comes from efficiency. Yes 71:20 I think if you're gonna do strength and conditioning like that, it should be after your skill work 71:25 This is my personal opinion. I think skill work should be done when you're not tired 71:31 It definitely you should learn all those sharp movements all the counters all the things it should be sharp if you're 71:37 Exhausted and your abs are fucking killing you and your neck is stiff and they like 71:42 It's like you're a little more labored with stuff 71:45 You you you don't you don't have the confidence and you don't have the like the the neural pathways of the sharpness 71:51 You know sometimes you learn a move and then you get it and you finally get it and then you're hitting pads or something 71:58 and just, you just get it, so it gets there. 72:01 And now it's in your head, like, oh, I know that path. 72:04 I know that path. 72:05 If all of a sudden that path gets sloppy, 72:08 then you start thinking, do I know it? 72:10 Do I know it the way I think I know it? 72:12 Can I land this at will? 72:13 If I see the opening, can I go, 72:15 or will it be a fraction of a second slow, 72:18 will it be a little off? 72:19 And you don't want, like, 72:21 if you go into these sessions tired, 72:23 you don't want to get used to being tired. 72:25 I know I know they say you got a train for when you're tired, but you don't want to get used to being tired 72:31 Right, so I feel like that starts you off at like a funny level, you know and and like another thing is what did you just pull up there? 72:38 Jimmy I asked for flex if there's any benefits to hard or athletic training hard cardio before skill work and it says yes 72:45 Let me see that. Let me see it says that scroll. Yes, there can be benefits 72:49 But it depends on whether you're trying to learn a skill or execute an established one under fatigue 72:52 Yeah, that's true. But the thing is you're always learning. That's the thing about like technique in terms of MMA 72:58 It's like so comprehensive hard cardio isn't automatically better preparation for skill work fatigue commonly reduces the quality of sport specific technique 73:06 That's exactly what we're talking about and your mental focus though. That's that's not limitless like right 73:12 It's if I if I there everyone's done a cardio session where it's so hard 73:18 You start to like your own brain starts to try to escape on you 73:22 Yeah, you know you find it hard to be in the moment where you are. Yes, because you just you're tired 73:28 You're tired if you you take you take that into a skill session 73:32 You're not gonna I personally I can't I can't work under like that because yeah 73:37 You know, I think skill is for fresh people 73:40 Yeah, and I think there's there's a real benefit to like flow rolling 73:44 There's a real benefit to like like shadow sparring. Yeah, where you're just touching and moving 73:50 And it's just you're just building pathways in your mind 73:52 But then there's also like a giant benefit to just breaking down the machine and pushing the fucking machine to its red line and 74:00 Forcing it to recover and build a stronger base, but it's a balance though 74:04 I don't think like whilst it has a place and I do it as well. I use the assault bikes and and treadmills and everything else I 74:11 I think though if you want to break yourself doing something it needs to be in the craft you're doing like if you 74:17 Want to get fitter wrestling you have to wrestle you have to be put in those positions 74:21 If you want to see where your skills take you under fatigue you have to wrestle to fatigue you have to grapple to fatigue 74:28 You know like well that's GSP's approach. Yeah 74:30 Later in his career later in his career 74:33 He essentially abandoned all the strength and conditioning and just did sports specific training just did hard rounds in the bag 74:39 Hard round sparring hard rounds drilling because that that's also what makes your body hard 74:43 Like you need to you need to be used to contact and stuff 74:48 There's been heaps of camps where I've like torn a calf muscle. So I've done like the back end of it 74:54 Just on like treadmills and assault and like treadmills concept twos that sort of stuff not treadmill 74:59 So concept twos assault bikes too many skierks too many camps have ended this way 75:04 And it just takes a mental toll on you having to push yourself to red line right in those sessions 75:11 This episode is brought to you by the mosquito bowl 75:14 Here's a story that's pretty incredible after Pearl Harbor four of the best college football players in America 75:20 Walk away from promising NFL careers to enlist in the Marines and fight in World War two and the craziest part 75:28 It's a true story 75:29 These guys had their whole lives ahead of them, but traded the glory of the gridiron for the brutal reality of combat, where the stakes were life and death, directed by Pete Berg, the guy behind Friday Night Lights, and starring Nicholas Galetzine, Bill Skarsgaard, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis, the 75:49 Mosquito Bowl, in theaters October 30th. 75:53 This episode is brought to you by NOCO, your miles from home, you turn the key, nothing. 75:58 Dead battery. 75:59 Normally, that means finding another car, someone willing to give you a jump and dealing with 76:03 old jumper cables. 76:05 But what if you didn't need any of that? 76:07 Keep a NOCO portable jump starter in your glove box and jump start your car yourself. 76:13 No cables, no second vehicle, no waiting for help. 76:17 It also works as a power bank and has a built-in LED flashlight. 76:21 Noko, the end of Jumper Cables. Use code ROGEN10 for 10% off. Select jump starters at 76:29 NO.CO. 76:31 Well, you know, that brings me to BJ Penn's prime, because one of the things that I've 76:36 talked about a bunch of times was he didn't really do much sports-specific training in 76:42 his prime for camps. He would do the camps with Marmarinovich. And Marmarinovich, his 76:48 His philosophy was you already know how to fight what we're gonna do is give you the most insane gas tank 76:54 And then you're gonna go in there free as a bird because you're never gonna think about cardio 76:59 You just can be able to perform. Yeah, and so it was all plyometrics. Yeah crazy 77:03 Plyometrics and all these weird box jumps and all this different shit and every day just getting broken down 77:10 broken down every day, but 77:12 But he would show up, shred it, and just looking like an absolute demon. 77:18 And he had been doing very little in terms of sparring, very little mitt training. 77:23 The philosophy was, you already know how to fight. 77:26 Take that thought and just throw it into this six, eight-week camp of insane cardio 77:32 and plyometrics. 77:34 And I think that's where I've kind of pushed my own training in the late end of 77:40 my career. 77:40 It's just, it's like being happy, enjoying the process. 77:44 Cause I, by this stage, I know how to fight, or I'm in trouble. 77:50 Either I've got it by now or I'm not going to get it. 77:55 So it's like, we don't need to work skills as much as review, revise, and just practice. 78:02 So I was like, I do a lot of mid work. 78:04 I do a lot of like light sparring movement, shadow sparring sort of work. 78:07 I do a lot of do a lot of rounds on in the game and and different position work really 78:13 What is the benefit you think in the game? Oh? 78:17 for MMA training 78:19 It's if you want to learn jiu-jitsu. It's I'm a big believer in in G. I'm a big believer in G 78:25 It's obviously it's different, but you can train a lot of G guys can transition transition transition from G to no 78:31 G mm-hmm very hard the other way around yes, you know, so it's and 78:37 And I think Damien Ma was a big believer in in key work. Well, a lot of the Brazilians are yeah, it's a religion. Yeah 78:44 The key for good reason. It's all about the key my friend. You need the key 78:48 Don't abandon the key like people got real mad. I don't know you weren't around back then the early days of 78:54 Gino G right the early days like when when did you start training? 78:59 Well, what would have been two thousand like for MMA. Yeah, it would have been like 79:04 2015. Right. So in like 2001, 2002, 2000-ish was when people started doing no 79:14 ghee and a lot of the Brazilians did not like it. There's a lot of pseudo like it. 79:20 A little loyalty to the ghee that was crazy. So when Eddie Bravo branched off 79:24 and started Tenth Planet, which was 2003, it was very controversial. Like what 79:30 is this guy, this guy abandoned the ghee. It was a real problem man. That sounds crazy 79:35 now because there's so many elite Brazilians that are in no ghee. They've kind of, just 79:39 like they abandoned the idea that leg locks are bad. If you did a leg lock back then in 79:45 a tournament, even though it was legal, everybody would boo. 79:47 Yeah, and you're getting beat up afterward probably. 79:49 Right. He looks, people would be furious at you. 79:51 You know what's great about the ghee in terms of, in terms of like a jujitsu side 79:56 of things, especially like in trend, like for MMA as well, is that you can't make as many 80:01 mistakes in the game. 80:03 Yes, absolutely. 80:03 You can't, it makes your positioning and your decision making so much more vital. 80:08 Because let's be honest, if you're an athletic guy, you can, you can get pretty far in no 80:14 game. 80:15 You can explode out of things. 80:17 You can explode out of a lot of things. 80:18 I've jumped into beginner classes and a really strong guy will still like shove 80:23 me from Mount or from the half guard, because I'm just not ready for him to just bench press 80:28 me. 80:29 You know what I mean? 80:29 Right, right, right. 80:29 It's just like these crazy beginner sort of… 80:33 Right, but if you're grabbing a hold of his gi, he's not doing any of that. 80:36 Yeah, well, and you can't make mistakes, because if you make a mistake, it gets 80:40 capitalized on, and you get into a bad position, then you're working from that 80:43 bad position. 80:44 Like, you're actually punished for errors. 80:47 I feel like a lot more so. 80:49 Obviously, in no gig, there's plenty of that as well, especially at the highest 80:52 level. 80:52 I think there's definitely something to it 80:54 Jean-Jacques Machado's approach was very interesting because you know Jean-Jacques was born with only a thumb on his left hand 81:02 So he has a right hand. That's a full hand, but he was born with just a thumb 81:06 So Jean-Jacques never relied on collar chokes and and grabbing cuffs 81:12 His technique was overhooks and underhooks. So when he went to Abu Dhabi 81:16 His technique right into no gi immediately translated because he was using wrestling base 81:22 Holds. Yeah, he was a lot of it was over hooks and under hooks systems. Yes same system 81:26 So when I learned from him, I did that I did his style and that was like because I'm still gonna do no 81:33 G with Eddie so so I was doing no gi at 10th planet and I was doing gi at John jocks 81:37 So I just decided to do it John jock style. Yeah John jock style was like the gi is great defensively because you have to 81:45 Excellent position and you have to have good defense 81:47 You have to make sure that you're doing the right thing because you're not gonna just yank yourself out of an armbar 81:51 Yes, it's not like when you're sweaty and you can just kind of explode out of things squirm and move real quick 81:56 You can't do any of that shit. You're trapped. So defensively. I felt it was very but I also felt like offensively 82:03 I should just do all the things that I do no gee and ignore the ghee and just accept a clock choke 82:09 I can't pass up on a clock choke if I get the best if I get that grip inside 82:13 and I get that hand on the other, or I could spin under. 82:16 Ooh, I love that, that's a ninja move, man. 82:20 I love me a clock joke. 82:21 But other than that, I felt like offensively 82:24 in terms of like controlling people, 82:26 I was gonna ignore the gi. 82:27 I was just gonna only use grips 82:30 that were wrestling-based grips. 82:33 And so that's how I proposed it. 82:33 I'm very much the same, and my coach 82:36 kind of teaches that way as well. 82:38 Like all my chokes in the gi even 82:39 are still just head and arm, really naked chokes. 82:42 Like just like real the real simple ones. Yeah, the basics. Yeah, well look at Marcelo Garcia 82:47 He's like my favorite example like Marcelo almost all of his victories by submission came from Chokes 82:54 Almost all of them. He beat Rico Rodriguez in absolute in Abu Dhabi with a heel hook, which was crazy 83:01 Yeah, but in all the other fights that he had 83:06 Every one of those submissions. I think was a choke. I don't think I've ever seen him get anybody in an arm bar 83:11 I'm sure he has but I don't never seen it. Well jokes can't be defended right right like in a lot of a lot of high-level guys 83:19 You'll see let their knees go let their arms go like especially in fighting especially in MMA 83:24 How many times have you seen like an arm like bust out yeah, or like heel hook in the knees 83:29 Sandhagan and they just knew his knee apart and that is last fight and it doesn't stop the fight though 83:34 If you're good like you're good. Yeah, and until it's over and but choking right like you're not 83:41 You go out. 83:41 Yeah, you're gone. 83:42 That's it. 83:42 It's over. 83:43 That was Marcel's approach. 83:44 New Kamoros. 83:45 He said, Kamoros was a strongman move. 83:47 You have to be strong. 83:48 Yes, you do. 83:49 So his just the whole thing was just get a hold of the necks, high elbow guillotine, rear 83:54 naked choke, anything you can do, head and arm choke, you know, whatever you could do 83:57 is just get a hold of the neck, you know. 84:00 He had a crazy north-south choke, his north-child choke is excellent. 84:04 He just figured out how to be like a master neck squeezer. 84:07 Yeah. 84:07 Yeah, and just find those right positioning. 84:09 Some guys are just good at it, though. 84:12 Like, just like MMA, there are guys 84:14 that are born gifted and talented for the craft. 84:17 Like, Craig Jones are freak. 84:19 Oh yeah, he's a freak. 84:22 But he's also a guy who loves Jujitsu. 84:25 Yes, yes. 84:25 He loves the game and being skillful 84:28 and setting traps and catching people. 84:30 He's a nerd for it. 84:30 He loves seeing the different things, 84:32 what works, what doesn't work. 84:34 Like he has he has his approach to it is so intellectual, but he's good enough to be able to implement it and 84:42 He's always having a good time 84:45 That's the thing right always looks like he's having a blast. Yeah 84:49 He is the funniest fucking guy in jujitsu by a long shot. Yeah, like there's no one he like he's like a professional comedian 84:54 Like he easily if he retired from competing could become a professional comic. I really believe that. Yeah, the dude's hilarious 85:01 Yeah, when he had that intergender fight with Gabby García 85:10 He's so silly 85:12 He's so silly, but that silliness 85:15 Is like a mask that covers up this assassin 85:19 Yeah, like when you start training with them and and do and like you watch them train with like elite guys 85:24 And he catches them and stuff. You're like, oh fuck man 85:27 Slick it's it's it's like so I've rolled with him and it's like you're drowning. It's just you 85:32 You're just wondering how this ends like what he's gonna finish you now. It's crazy is imagine Gordon can do that to him 85:41 That's that's what's crazy. Well Gordon could do that to everybody. That's what's crazy 85:45 I thought about this 85:46 I thought like how would I go about fighting those dudes and I'd be like I'm doing 85:51 Everything in my power to not get like grabbed at all because it's over once once once you get sucked into it 85:58 You can't play safe with these guys. Well, especially with Gordon 86:01 He's so good at controlling people because he doesn't have an athletic base style at all like he talks about it 86:07 He says I'm not an athletic guy. I don't move fast 86:09 So all of my jiu-jitsu is controlled and it's also when he gets a hold of you. That's it. It's over 86:16 Yeah, Hicks and Gracie said this to me once it was like hearing that the dopest fucking conversation 86:20 I ever had with them. I've had a few with him that are pretty cool, but we're over his house 86:25 And we're watching some fight tapes 86:27 It was me and him and his son crone and we're sitting there and we're watching these these fight tapes 86:33 And he's explaining what these guys are doing wrong. He was watching this like Mario sperry face. That'd be so cool 86:39 It was the dopest shit ever 86:40 And he said and he was talking about how these guys are losing position and he goes we all started a neutral position 86:47 We all started zero and he goes and once I go to one. I'm not going back to zero. I'm going to two 86:54 I'm going to three. I'm going to check me and it was like so intense. Yeah, what are you saying it? 87:00 It was like yeah, but it was like this is a fact 87:03 Yeah, if I get you in a position 87:05 You're not getting out of it and I'm advancing to the next spot and I'm advancing to the next spot and then check me 87:15 Yeah, it was the dopest conversation these guys are like samurai's of today. Oh, yeah 87:20 Like that that mentality they have yeah, that is the the way of the warrior. Well, Hickson was a true pioneer too with physical training 87:29 So Hickson was like the first jujitsu guy to adopt extreme flexibility 87:35 Yoga cold plunges. He was doing these cold plunges in the river glacial rivers in Japan before he fought in Japan 87:43 Valetudo, it's in the video. It's cool. It's fucking freezing cold water and he's in there just fucking 87:50 It's amazing he was doing neck exercises with like bands where he was like going upstairs or pulling against a tree with a 87:58 Fucking a thing to control his neck muscles 88:01 Yeah, strengthen his neck muscles 88:02 He was doing shit that nobody was nobody had figured out SNC years ahead of the game way ahead of the game 88:07 Yeah balance work balance beam stuff where he's doing a standing split on a balance beam 88:12 Yeah, well, you know and that that sort of stuff is so vital for MMA because 88:17 is you're just, there is no controlled position. 88:21 Right. 88:21 Like, cause you're constantly moving with, 88:23 like obviously the external variable is the opponent 88:27 is trying to do things to you. 88:28 And you're kind of working with that 88:30 whilst trying to do your own things. 88:32 And you're never in a position where your body's controlled. 88:35 Like it's very imbalanced. 88:37 So doing a lot of these imbalanced sort of exercises 88:40 and balance exercises where you're strengthening 88:42 one muscle or flexing one muscle or turning one on. 88:46 Yeah, they're so important. That's why I think I think you mentioned it we started to just beforehand 88:52 Gymnastics as a baseline for yes, anything 88:57 Anything is just 88:59 The best yeah, so physically strong to be able to throw yourself in the air and land on your feet and move around like that 89:06 Like that dude who did the front flip to the ass. Yeah, we found out with break dancing 89:11 so what one of things that happened with the 89:16 with 10 Planet was they started bringing in break dancers. 89:21 And Eddie Bravo realized like, oh my God, 89:23 Gio Martinez and Richie Martinez, 89:25 these two guys were excellent break dancers. 89:27 They do all this crazy shit, like hop on one hand 89:30 and do like a handstand and do a lotus with your legs 89:33 without even touching your feet, crazy stuff. 89:36 But that ability to control your body, 89:39 we realized translates directly to Jiu-Jitsu. 89:41 Yeah, it does. 89:42 So Eddie started like learning break dancing 89:45 To like help jiu-jitsu Eddie's super open-minded. He'll try anything. He sees someone that's really good. It's like, what are you doing? 89:51 How do you do that? Like if someone does something in the class, let's stop the whole class. Is that did you make that up? 89:56 Did you invent that? Yeah shows how you do it and he'll have everybody go through why I do this 90:00 But I find that they counter that so I'm holding it like this now and everybody's like oh 90:05 And then they'll study it and break it down. Yeah, so he saw these guys break dance 90:08 He's like wait what why the fuck are you so strong like what's going on here? Can Eddie break dance? 90:13 I don't know if you really got good at it, but I know he was definitely learning some of the stuff 90:17 Yeah, yeah, just as a strength and conditioning routine. Yeah. Well, I was I was super lucky so early on in my career 90:22 Like most MMA was still very new 90:25 So I did the information wasn't out there today like today 90:29 You can get a full information plan of AI 90:33 And just and just find out anything you want 90:35 But I was super lucky to meet my wife as early as I did because her background is elite gymnastics 90:40 And elite gymnastics like they're animals. Oh, yeah 90:44 They their whole life is one long camp because they can't stop because they can't put on weight 90:49 They can't do it like it's just they're just in it forever until they're not it is wild 90:55 Like every day is performance-based. It's like long hours. So her mentality 91:01 really kind of led me in 91:04 Into my my craft and me in my early days when she teach you gymnastics 91:09 She tried, she tried, she tried, like, and there's a lot, like, she was the one that 91:15 made me realise how important a strong core is, like a strong core. 91:20 The core is everything, to like as a person, like just being able to move and walk around 91:24 and especially with the dynamic movements of MMA and fighting, it's like, so, but she 91:29 was actually the one that like, she was my nutritionist, she was like my strength 91:33 and conditioning coach at one point, because she had like the health science background 91:38 and sports science background and oh how convenient and always just a poor kid that could fight 91:44 That's awesome though. What a great combination lucky super lucky. Yeah 91:49 I think a lot of people neglect core work like real core like rotational core work 91:54 I know I did for a long time and I just started doing it a few years ago 91:58 Like really getting into 91:59 Rotational work like a lot of like heavy cable rotational work and kettlebell rotational work man 92:05 It's just I was doing it out of necessity because I kept getting injured 92:08 I was getting certain certain lower back injuries that were like a repetitive use injury and I said I think there's an imbalance 92:16 You know so a lot of it. I was getting from archery 92:19 So I was getting this tendonitis and my lower right side and what it is is because I'm pulling back with one arm 92:26 Like a hundred times a day. Yeah, and I'm not doing anything on the other side. Yeah 92:30 So all my stability is on this side 92:32 I'm like pulling back on that side and I'm locking myself in place and it started to fuck with me 92:37 And so I went to a physical therapist and he started recommending some and one of them was rotational shit 92:41 Yeah, and then as soon as I started doing I was like why wasn't I doing this my whole life exactly so stupid? 92:47 I'm such a moron. Yeah. Yeah, so it's like it's so vital 92:50 It's like it's like all your other physical capabilities get capped 92:54 Yeah, I'd like 80% and that that having that strong core just unlocks that yeah 92:59 Just makes your whole body stronger. It's like living living is better pick up your kids without pulling up 93:05 Yeah, it improves everything it really does they say that like if you do those 93:11 You know those hanging foot to bar moves 93:16 Just a hanging foot to bar. Yeah, that improves your deadlift that improves your clean and and press 93:23 That improves the strength of all your chin ups. It improves everything. Yeah, that one move 93:27 Yeah, Donna hers number one move. He said the one move that he says is a must a mandatory for all athletes 93:34 You have to be able to do that. Oh, so what what movies is this that hanging chin up bar? 93:39 You're hanging and then you lift your feet up and oh, yes 93:42 Yes, no momentum so you have to be you have to stabilize it at the bottom and then pull it all up and 93:48 Stabilize it at the bottom pull it off that one movement because it's so core-intensive that movement. Yeah, yeah 93:55 For that right there. That's like it's it's like what that's why I have so much to respect you see those guys that like barkings 94:03 They're like holding out full extension walking flagpole 94:08 Just jack 94:10 like 94:12 They they must only eat salad 94:17 Like it doesn't look like you could burn a 94:19 It's stupid amount of calories just on bots. 94:22 But you are, right? 94:23 Because you're building muscle and the muscle requires more calories and you're essentially 94:28 like lifting your own body weight all day. 94:31 Those guys do it for hours and hours at a time. 94:33 And I guess like having any extra weight would affect the performance of all this stuff by 94:41 a great degree. 94:42 What is this guy doing? 94:43 I don't know. 94:43 I just went to their most recent video they put up. 94:45 Oh, this is Bar Stars? 94:46 He's just using his fingers, but that's great. He must be some kind of a rock climber. That's freakish 94:53 Yeah, some of these do what is this? 94:56 Hey, bro, you trying to 94:59 Are you trying to do you understand electricity this this video? 95:04 Don't do that 95:06 Kids at home. Don't do that. That is terrible. How can you do that and not die? 95:10 Are those not power lines maybe the powers out it took a chance now's my time 95:15 Maybe he did it properly and grounded himself, and then went up there for the video. 95:19 Fuck, do you ground yourself, but you hold it on to those. 95:22 Just, you ever heard, like, what it sounds like for those guys that have to work on 95:25 those power lines? 95:26 You can just hear the, you hear the, yeah, and you just imagine the kind of power 95:32 that's going through those fucking things. 95:34 Electricity's scary, isn't it? 95:35 Terrifying. 95:36 Like, I was an electrician for a little bit. 95:37 Were you really? 95:38 Yeah. 95:38 Yeah, that's why I started. 95:40 I was an electrician. 95:40 No shit. 95:41 I was like Trishon as I was like kind of fighting on the local scenes professional still but on the local scenes 95:45 And then I got the call up for ultimate fighter and I said I'm gonna take some annual leave 95:50 When I'm the ultimate fighter. So did you go through an apprenticeship? Yeah. Yeah. I was a fourth-year apprentice 95:54 So I was I was supposed to I was doing my capstone, which is the end test 95:58 And I was gonna do that and then the ultimate fighter said all right come in. Let's go try you out 96:03 I went on the show. I applied for annual leave never 96:07 Never went back never went back. Maybe I wonder if they have my job still there 96:12 I have a buddy of mine my friend shout out to Jimmy D'Atilio back home in Boston 96:16 He worked with this guy who lost his face 96:20 He just had just some crazy power thing and just scorched his skin all over his whole face. Just got zapped 96:26 Just got electrocuted. Yeah, something went wrong. That's crazy. Like yeah, electricity 96:31 She's and it cuz it's not like the damage you get like there are heaps of people that can get 96:35 Let's you didn't be fine, and then this heaps that just died straight away 96:40 My buddy Remy got hit by lightning. No. Yeah. Yeah, when he was young. I think he was in high school 96:46 Well, he lived but he got fucked up and he woke up on the ground and realized eventually what happened 96:53 Yeah, wow. Yeah 96:55 That's good. That's fucking terrifying. Do you think that's a good omen or a bad omen? 97:00 neither 97:03 It's not good cuz you got hit by lightning. It's not good luck. You lived a good luck would be the lightning lands five feet away from you 97:10 And you're like fuck. Let's get off this mountain bad luck as you get hit by lightning 97:14 But worse luck as you die. Yeah, I think bad luck would be turning into some chocolate 97:20 I wonder like is it just like sometimes you live because like sometimes you don't get a full black 97:25 Like one of them blasted like cuts a tree in half. You've seen those. Yeah 97:30 Yeah, I guess that kills you. Well, it seems like that would kill you. I think I think I think I think the 97:39 Lightning has a lot of voltage not a lot of current 97:43 And it's the current is the current that kills you. Oh 97:49 Interesting. I think I think the difference 97:53 This episode is brought to you by chime and I know people don't usually get excited about banking 97:58 But CHIME is doing something different and it's worth paying attention to. 98:02 In a recent survey, they ranked the number one choice for new checking accounts in America. 98:08 That means real people, millions of them, are choosing this over traditional banks. 98:12 That's because banking at CHIME is fee-free. 98:15 No monthly fees, no overdraft fees, and thousands of fee-free ATMs. 98:21 But here's the real kicker. 98:22 If you get their CHON card, it gives you 5% cash back on a category you actually 98:27 pick yourself. Your savings rate, crazy high. It's nine times the national average. They're 98:33 calling it the most rewarding way to bank. Go to chime.com slash rogan. Takes a few minutes 98:38 to sign up. Well, you're looking pretty smart five minutes ago 99:00 I mean the game for a little bit I 99:04 Just hot minute. I think it's probably you have a heart attack. It's it's probably what it does to a lot of people and it burns you 99:09 Obviously, obviously. Yeah, I think it probably just short circuits your entire system. Yeah, well, that's what a d-fib is right? 99:16 It's like literally trying to short-circuit your heart back. Have you ever seen a video? 99:20 This is one guy he's well. I think he's in his driveway. He's walking down the driveway 99:25 He gets hit by lightning falls the ground goes out wakes up starts walking again. It's hit again 99:33 Two kids hit twice like one of the fucking odds. I hope it's real 99:38 Once you say one of the odds the odds are very low. I think it's not real 99:42 But well, it's a old video the only reason why I don't think it's a I it could be fake 99:46 You pissed someone off to get hit by a lot of it twice. 99:50 You did something bad. 99:51 You cheated on your taxes. 99:53 You did something bad. 99:54 You did some fraud. 99:55 We're not going straight to confession afterwards. 99:57 Yeah, you stole something. 99:59 Something, man. 100:00 You kicked a cat when no one was watching you, like... 100:03 The two strikes and catching it on video are, like, impossible. 100:07 But I thought it was a security camera. 100:08 That was in his driveway. 100:09 People faked it all the time. 100:11 No, no, no. 100:11 Those are all real. 100:12 No, those are all real, Jamie. 100:13 Shut the fuck up, Jamie. 100:14 See, look, he got back up and I was about to get hit again. 100:16 I don't think that's the guy. 100:17 Oh, people fake this all the time. 100:19 Bro, you can kill that guy with a balloon. 100:20 That guy is not getting hit by lightning and living. 100:23 I think he's got scorched marks. 100:25 Oh, fuck off. 100:26 Look at the homemade scorched marks. 100:29 Look at the homemade scorched marks. 100:30 I was getting falls down too, bitch-ass, fake falls. 100:33 This one actually is not getting hit twice. 100:34 This is a more recent one, but. 100:36 That probably is real. 100:37 I'm just kidding. 100:38 I get sucked into these videos all the time. 100:40 I'm sorry, sir. 100:40 If you got hit by lightning and I'm mocking you, 100:42 we're just having fun. 100:43 It's all love. 100:44 I'm sorry. 100:45 We're just joking around, sir. 100:47 I hope he really didn't get hit by lightning. I hope he faked it because it's not funny getting hit by lightning 100:52 It's not funny if you live it's all right. I guess 100:57 If you died, I would be bad. This is the guy. Yeah, shut up. Jamie 101:02 This is real. You don't know shit. Jamie. This is real 101:06 So the guy gets up and he starts walking now watch this he gets hit again 101:12 I'm pretty sure this is real Jamie is having the unluckiest day of his life 101:18 Brother's real 101:19 That's as real as the baby Jesus 101:21 He's been struck twice 101:22 It's real! 101:24 Jamie 101:25 Water gets struck a third time 101:27 Come on, Jamie 101:28 Tune in next week 101:29 Shut up! 101:30 Why are you ruining everything? 101:34 I think that one's real 101:36 Yeah, that one's real 101:44 Oh my goodness is a fucked up way to go. Yeah fucked up way to go. Yeah, it's just 101:49 Peris smoking shoes. That's why tasers are wild like you ever see like a dude who's like methed up against taste 101:55 And he just starts screaming and pulls the things out of his body. Yeah 101:57 Yeah, like how come like six six cops and then just like 102:05 Fuck isn't that hulk rage moment like yeah, but some people they just 102:09 Yeah, shut off and go straight down to the ground. I want to in my head cannon 102:14 I'm that like I just rip it off. I take it. I'm probably just like I'm pretty sure I fall down 102:20 I'm sure it falls down still as a board. I fall down immediately 102:25 You know, it's not even getting that far I'm putting my hands 102:29 Yeah, don't tase me happy to comply 102:33 Fuck yeah, it's just like some people like Dana White on his show 102:38 Dana white's looking for a fight. They all got tased once 102:41 Yeah, I was here. I'll ask you if you have done it cuz no 102:48 Tased that's he's ridiculous. It doesn't seem fun at all. It's just I don't want to have a heart attack either 102:52 Like what if you get a heart because it can happen 102:58 Yeah, yeah, he's pretty jacked. Oh, no, he's he's ex-army. I think I've seen this he's like ex-navy seals or something 103:06 Like and he's got like PTSD. Yeah, he's having a problem and he's barefoot. Yeah, he's earthing 103:13 It doesn't work you better run and and you know what's crazy like he's a big unit, too 103:19 Yeah, he's a big fucker and why why did they send for women cops to do I like how he's still holding his phone, too 103:26 What do you say tased me all day? I love pain. Oh 103:29 Fun some people have just built yeah, I don't understand that so is it some people's bot because I thought it didn't 103:37 Until I saw a few of these guys online might 103:40 Original ignorant thought was once they tase you you get zapped. No matter how much you are contracting you go everything just fall down 103:46 Yeah, that's it. No, apparently not 103:51 This yeah, that guy didn't even seem bothered by it. No didn't didn't flinch. That's great. Let me see that again 103:57 Let me see him get taste 104:00 You sure that's the light thing is real now. What's fake Jamie? 104:06 Honestly this guy gets struck by lightning 104:09 I don't pain tolerance. He said I 104:13 Don't reckon he takes a knee if you haven't tased him yet at that point. They did where they did 104:18 Mr. Oh, yeah. Oh, you can see him spaz out react 104:23 You know what is funny when when they might not have gone in until I was also 104:27 We pull it out that easy when the guys like try to make a leg for it 104:30 They try to try to make a bolt for it and they get hit mid stride it. Yeah, that's fun. Those are fun 104:36 It says he said get down on the ground. He goes negative 104:41 That's not good 104:47 Well, he's just depending upon them not shooting him that's the problem it's like I don't think he cares either 104:53 Well, he should definitely care about that because I don't care how tough you are yeah unloads his magazine into you 105:00 You're gonna be dead. Yes. Yeah, I mean I don't he's depending on them. Well, who knows what the fucking scenario was 105:07 I don't know. Yeah, maybe he's right. Who fucking knows. Yeah, sometimes people get pulled over for bullshit reasons 105:12 And they're right to get pissed off. I don't know what happened there, but mm-hmm from my own 105:18 Observation looks like the man's a tad unhinged 105:21 Yeah, and he's he's too big to be unhinged. Yeah 105:26 He's a monster of a man. Yeah, he was I was getting real screwed by it. Stephen's true 105:31 Right, right, right screw vibes from that guy. It's definitely true. I forgot about him 105:36 Yeah, there's a few of those guys that fought in the UFC. There's just so fucking tall. Yes, semi-shilt 105:41 No, semi-shilt elite kickboxer K1 champion and from Holland nasty front kick seven feet tall 105:48 Yeah, he was so big. He was just ridiculously tall and he just would step forward and throw these front kicks and fuck you up with them 105:56 Yeah, that's I feel like I would have been such a good toll fodder 106:01 You know I mean if I just had like an extra foot or it just give me an extra inch 106:06 I reckon I could have couldn't do some really cool things for you to stay at 170 106:11 Like what was your 170 cut like? Oh, it was not marriage. It would start off. It's a sort of thing 106:18 Obviously, when I was at 170, I started when I was a teenager, so I started at 18, and then 106:24 I went, I was 170 until about 23, and it was just getting harder and harder. 106:32 As you age, you just get bigger and bigger, and I've always been like a naturally heavy 106:36 guy, heavy-set guy. 106:37 I think it's my moldy jeans, and the last weight cut I did was 7.4 kilos on the 106:46 day so that's 16 pounds 17 pounds what is that yeah that's a lot in one day yeah 106:55 like morning of it was that was what year was this I would have been 24 24 so 107:03 2000 so you had like great performances at welterweight like really 107:09 promising performances but for sure when you went up to 85 that's when you 107:14 became Robert Whitaker. That's when you really became, for certain. Yeah, it's like you had 107:19 found the sweet spot. Yeah. And some people, there's that, the gaps are so enormous between 107:25 weight classes, which I think is a real problem. Yeah. 15 pounds is a lot of weight. Yeah. 107:30 In boxing, that would be three or four weight classes. Yeah. Whereas in MMA, it's one. And 107:34 the 70 to 85 gap is big, but the 85 to 205 gap is bananas. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, 107:39 it is it is but I was I was always kind of cutting down from a 205 a 285 and it 107:46 just get it just got harder and harder you know I mean especially with I've been 107:51 I've been fortunate and blessed enough to fight for a long career and I've had I've 107:55 been able to have a ton of fights so to you just kind of get sick of cutting 108:00 weight constantly you get sick of and then the camps themselves are tricky 108:05 because you're trying to fuel yourself for the sessions, but you can't eat too much. 108:11 And food is a direct link to recovery and performance. 108:16 So that was one of the biggest things I noticed moving up to heavyweight was that the camps 108:22 are just so much better. 108:23 So I can just eat. 108:24 I can eat carbs. 108:25 I can eat carbs. 108:25 I can just fuel my body, and my body was stronger during the camp. 108:30 I had more energy during the camps. 108:32 Like I didn't really I the weight cuts were kind of the same because I still wanted to have some size and has some weight behind me 108:39 So I still I still made the weight cut. It's not like I just walked in there 108:42 But your body's more or less filling into its natural state. Yes, rather than staying and it's constantly depleted state exactly 108:48 Like especially at once like at 170. What did you walk around at? I want to say it would have been 108:54 like 108:56 94 ish kilos 108:58 92 ish kilos. What is that Jim? 109:04 We're about 198, so close to 200 pounds, close to 30 pounds of cutting, that's a lot. 109:12 Yeah, and then as well as because I've been in the game for so long and you want to send 109:17 better than most, like there's life going on around you, I don't know what it was because 109:22 the last few middleweight camps I had did not enjoy them, the cut, the diet, the trading 109:29 fatigue. I've got a bunch of kids at home trying to hang out with six kids when I'm 109:35 this fatigued. Starving. Starving issues. You kind of get sick of it. You get burnt 109:40 out a little bit from from from that style thing. And one one one of the big 109:44 things that I don't know why it seems like a small thing but one of the big 109:47 things that made me like sad was that I went I went to my cupboard and 109:53 nothing fits because like I get I get fitted for suits when I'm like trim 109:58 when I'm lean, when my shorts are in, 110:01 so like if I'm walking around my normal weight, 110:03 I don't have clothes. 110:06 And I know how stupid that sounds, how little that is, 110:10 but it made me sad. 110:11 It's like, at the end of this career that I've had, 110:13 like I've been in the UFC for 15 years, 110:15 end of my career, I'm gonna have no clothes. 110:21 And it made me, I was like, I was upset. 110:24 I was like. 110:24 That's hilarious. 110:25 It's just it doesn't really make sense, but it it made sense to me made me upset 110:30 That's why I was another thing where I was like, I'm gonna only go I want to walk around and have clothes 110:37 Something to show for this. Don't you think that MMA would be better in general if there was a way to stop weight-cutting? 110:44 Just avoid it and then you fight at what you actually weigh when you're at your healthiest 110:49 You'd have to have way more options for weight glasses for sure 110:52 And there would have to be some way to monitor to make sure the people aren't dehydrating themselves 110:57 Almost like you know how we're talking about how drug-free sport or your soda 111:01 Could just randomly drug test you yeah, they show up and drug 111:03 Yeah, they should be able to went randomly weigh you to show up just here get down in your underwear get on a scale 111:09 Oh, you're fighting at 170, but you weigh 208 111:13 That's not right, but then you should be fighting at 205 111:16 But then that takes away a lot of free agency from the athlete like 111:21 That's it though because you could change your body weight if you so choose right like you see a lot of these like 111:28 You know day like Dave Bautista or the wrestler who's enormous at one point time now 111:33 He's slimming down and getting shredded so he could take on more roles more complex acting roles 111:39 Yeah, that could be done like you could do that as a professional fighter as well 111:42 You can do a lot more cardio and get your body down to a healthy level of whatever it is 111:47 Whatever whatever weight class you're at your best, but when then when you jump on that family holiday that family cruise 111:53 You're at the salad bar the entire time 111:55 That doesn't sound super fun. That doesn't sound super fun. But I mean, I don't think I don't advocate that 112:01 I'm saying be healthy and eat food. Yeah be at a weight 112:05 That's a real like if everybody just fought at the weight 112:09 They are when they're in shape and eating the adequate amount of food to fuel you like a real full meal 112:16 Like, full meals every session, eating fruit, getting in your carbs, drinking tons of water, 112:22 never being dehydrated, but this is what you weigh with, you know, 10% body fat, natural, 112:26 healthy fit. 112:28 What is that? 112:28 That should be how everybody fights. 112:30 Yeah, I guess in a perfect world, like, I have zero idea on how you would implement 112:34 something like that. 112:35 I don't either. 112:35 Like, no answers. 112:36 And I've thought about, obviously, there's been a question in the MMA world for the 112:41 longest time. 112:41 In all sports with weight divisions, really. 112:43 Of course. 112:44 But it's just it's just you also then look at human nature, and it's just our 112:49 Tendency to push the envelope. Well, especially in a sport that has been predicated on that. Yeah 112:55 It's people have been doing that forever. They've been cutting massive amounts of weight forever. Yeah, well 112:59 I guess maybe because the sport or 113:02 Sprouted here, right? It's just it's taken a lot of the wrestling mentality exactly and weight cuts and weight divisions and 113:09 All that into into the sport itself, but I definitely feel like 113:14 So, you see more of that, like that dichotomy of that kind of scenario of more natural weight 113:21 classes, the higher up you go in the weight divisions, so you see more in like heavy weights 113:25 where guys are, they're more normal weight class, or especially in heavy weight. 113:31 They're all just big boys, you know what I mean? 113:34 And some look like Uber Eam, and some look like, I don't know, Pat Bury. 113:40 He's the best. 113:41 Yeah. 113:42 Uber aim the uber aim days is the best argument for keeping steroids in sports 113:49 What are we doing like the pride we were talking about this last night at the club the pride days 113:55 Yeah, the pride heavyweight days was the greatest heavyweight lineup in the history of the fucking sport 114:01 It doesn't seem like everyone was a heavyweight. There's so many heavyweights man 114:04 Well, first of all, they would encourage you to gain weight 114:07 Yeah, like one of the guys from Eddie's gym Jason Chambers fought over there and when he fought over there 114:13 They're like you should be 185 and he's like, I don't I'm not 185. They're like you should get on steroids like 114:23 We can make it we can make it one anyway 114:26 It's an anyway when he did the podcast he told me very specifically that in the contract 114:31 It said in capital letters. We do not test for steroids 114:41 And you saw those fights, they were amazing, amazing, mental, and the greatest heavyweight 114:48 division that has ever been assembled, Mirko Krokop in his prime, Fedor in his prime, Nogara 114:55 in his prime, Vandalee, well Vandalee really shouldn't have been fighting at heavyweight, 114:59 but he did. 115:00 He fought Mark Hunt. 115:01 Remember that fight? 115:02 Oh Jesus. 115:03 He fought Mark Hunt. 115:04 I was like, oh my God. 115:05 Getting hit by Mark Hunt. 115:06 If you're 180 five-pounder, that's crazy fade or bro fade or cheese 115:11 Oh my goodness, I got knocked out by crow cop when you got head kicked when Vanilla got a good. Yeah, good. Lord 115:17 Yeah, it got folded is uh croc ops head kicks was just insane 115:21 Oh, what a twist of fate the way that he got head kicked by Gonzaga. Yeah, yeah, but it was such a 115:29 It was such a thing because that's his thing. He got croc ops. You can't you can't croc hop croc hop 115:34 I know and by a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with nobody expecting to win that way 115:39 Yeah, it was it was well forget about Gonzaga. Yeah, Gonzaga was a fucking beast 115:44 He was a beast. That's that's the answer to white divisions absolute 115:50 But some guys can't do it, you know, I definitely do a shot can't fight absolute 115:54 But he could be one of the elite of all time at bantamite, you know, yeah, here's Mark Hunt and van de Lea, bro 116:00 Mark Elvin's so big. He was 265. 116:04 He was fighting 185 or 205 and it's Mark Hunt like he just he's not a 116:11 Fun fight ever. No, well first of all almost impossible to hurt 116:14 Yeah, that guy got head kicked by crow cop and just went well good shot got back up 116:19 Come back up. It's fine. Good one. I think he got head kicked with shoes 116:25 They were wearing wrestling shoes 116:27 Oh, yeah, it was fine. Bro. He was a tank. He could eat them. You eat those shots 116:32 And he had touch of death touch of death and the one of the greatest walk-offs in the history of sport 116:37 He he KO you and just go oh, you're gone and just turn around 116:40 Even if you weren't going he'd still just walk away and the referee would stop 116:48 That's it 116:53 Some of those walk-offs you're like, I don't know if that's a real KO 116:56 Yeah, you're like maybe that guy could if he got on top and kept going and just covering up 117:01 It might have he might have lasted to the end of the round 117:03 there are plenty of times I see a walk of KO and 117:07 You're exactly that like they can't you know how sometimes guys come back. Yes after getting hit a couple more times 117:13 Right, so they come back and then then you've gassed yourself and then you're in for another four the best example 117:18 That is 117:19 Anderson Silva Michael Bisping 117:21 Yes, he hits him with a flying knee at the bell. It looks like he's KO'd it looks like the fight is over 117:27 But Herb Dean did not stop the fight. Yeah, it was her Dean and then Anderson hops up on top of the cage 117:33 How is celebrating? Yeah, he's like yeah, he's ready to hit the showers 117:37 This thing comes back in the next round and wins it and wins the decision. Yeah, what's one fucking? 117:42 I 117:44 Animal how how does that mess you up mentally if because I know the the feeling of winning here 117:50 It is she lost his mouthpiece boom 117:52 He gets KO'd and Anderson walks off like that's it and Herb Dean said no, it's not over 117:59 So Anderson takes his mouthpiece out. Oh, he's doing his thing. Yeah, he's doing this thing. He thinks it's over 118:08 How does that how does 118:10 How does that affect you if like if you're if you're there because the feeling you get so look at this 118:18 He hops up on the cage. He thinks it's oh 118:20 He thinks it's over the feeling you get the high you get when you win a fight is 118:27 Ridiculous, so if he's if he's feeling that now well, he obviously is he's sitting on the cage 118:32 They're telling him and he's saying it's not over. Look. He goes fuck. He realizes it right now 118:36 It's not over which is crazy. Yeah, because if he just followed up with one or two shots one hundred percent 118:41 I would have been over. Yeah, but didn't didn't the bell buzzer go when he landed that knee? Maybe yeah 118:46 I think you're right. I think it's like right there 118:48 Yeah, I think you land the knee and then the buzzer went off like right afterwards 118:52 Mark Hunt's walk-offs were like I've had enough of this. Yeah, like uppercuts. It's like he's called it over 118:59 Yeah, it's like this is over crazy man crazy 119:03 But it's been what a fucking animal maybe they're like most mentally tough guys ever fought in sport 119:08 To just to be able to do that with one eye. He fought 11 fights with one eye. Yeah, and didn't tell anybody memorize the eye chart 119:17 Really? Yeah 119:18 Yes, you had never eyes the eye chart so you could do it. I guess I close 119:22 I guess you have to but no crazy. Don't they don't they randomized what kind of I don't know 119:27 Or maybe just like maybe they don't yeah, I mean, I don't know 119:31 Do they randomize our charts who look what kind of an asshole is gonna memorize it? 119:37 I bet they don't I bet they don't think anyone's gonna try to cheat 119:41 Have an eye chart you fucking memorize the doctor's as far as like, oh, yeah change it from last yeah. Yeah, I guess 119:48 Maybe I mean, but I think he memorized 119:50 But just the will to do that what you've already lost sight in one of your eyes 119:54 Yeah, and to continue to fight and know potentially you could lose sight in the other eye 119:58 You know that's what he loses vision from is gone now like from from from a shot. Yes 120:04 No, I put or punch Vtor he got head kicked. Yes, that'll do it 120:08 Yeah, he got head kicked and there was a first of many eye surgeries. So I remember he was I 120:16 Met him backstage after one of those fights when he had like one of his first surgeries 120:22 And he had like oil in his eye 120:24 They had injected something in his eye to protect his eyeball. It was crazy like his eye look really strange 120:30 Yeah, I was like what's going on with your eye and he was explaining to me 120:33 He had this surgery and to protect his eye, but I think by that time he had already 120:39 gotten 120:40 Lost a lot of his vision according to a comment and I read it 120:43 Yeah, he said the doctor was out of the office bisping went right up to it and memorized the eye chart 120:49 Yeah, I think that's what he did if it's on if it's on reddit 120:51 Yeah, you can take that. Well, how about Shara Bullitt? 120:54 Shara Bullitt, who's fighting Izzy, he's only got one eye, too. Yeah, when's that? Is that dough, huh? 121:00 I think so. Well, he has to fight over there. I don't think he's allowed to fight over here. 121:05 I think if you fight over here, you're blind in one eye. They won't let you fight. Yeah, yeah, yeah 121:10 He's beating like top-level guys. Yeah, yes with one fucking eyeball. Yep. He's another guy who got tuned up by Michael Venom Page. 121:17 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 121:19 Michael Venom Page he just looks so... 121:22 Annoying to fight cuz it's like obviously I 121:25 It's a point of pride that I'll fight everyone and anyone but then people like like what about my girlfriend page one. Yeah, there's this other guys 121:32 I'm glad you this I only want to fight guys 121:36 MVP's another guy that they didn't offer a contract to same thing. He won his last fight 121:40 Oh, no, I really yeah, he I mean he only lost once in the UFC and that was to Ian Gary. Yeah, and 121:48 They didn't offer him a contract. He's gone 121:51 Is he? Yeah, he's gone. I did not know that. Same kind of deal. Yeah, just point-spiring. 121:56 They just decided that they don't want to see that. Point-fighting. You know, 121:59 but my take is, my take is like, we have to be purists about this. Fighting is fighting. 122:05 Yeah. And if someone has a style like that, 122:07 it's up to someone else to figure out how to beat it. Yeah. 122:09 Douglas Lima figured out how to beat it in Bellator. Yeah. 122:12 He leg kicked him and KOed him. Yes. And then he beat him in a rematch as well. 122:15 Yes. That's always been my take, like, if I had to look to dissect him, 122:19 because when I was a middleweight obviously I'm doing that with most of them. 122:22 It's this leg kicks. Agile guys, agile guys, good footwork, 122:27 you've got to chop the tree down. You've got to. 122:30 This is your only way. You've got to slow those feet. 122:32 And most people don't realize when you're watching it because the guys are moving around 122:36 they look normal. They're so compromised. Like one or two hard calf kicks and you're so 122:41 compromised. Calf kicks are the worst aren't they? 122:44 Crazy. Like one good calf kick. Not only do you run the risk of like breaking that 122:49 What is it fibia? I don't know what it is, but that one fibula one of them 122:53 Yeah, you are like you cuz that's like breaking that's real. Yeah, I break in that's real 122:58 But it hurts and it just it just stuffs you up and your your leg doesn't work right 123:04 You see that all the time where guys just their leg doesn't work right right now 123:07 And they're trying to move around and it's just not responding correctly 123:10 So that most of their weight is on their other leg and they're faking it. Yeah, like faking their movement 123:15 Yeah, and once once that lights compromised it opens you up to more leg kicks 123:19 Yeah, like it's harder to defend the next coffee what practice did the Jack 123:25 My god when Jack went back to the corner and he yelled at the end of the round like hey don't fucking yell 123:30 No, ah, don't say no kicks you don't do that. Yeah, but it was so much pain 123:36 I was watching it and saying 123:38 Ah 123:42 Punishing punishing and that was always like a whole Jack had to feel 123:47 Was very boxing style 123:50 Boxing heavy heavy on the front leg and you just yeah 123:53 The thing too is like those guys who are really good at switching stances have a giant advantage 123:58 If you're one of those guys that must stand orthodox or must dance outpaw and you get that front leg compromise 124:04 And now all sudden you're in a bad position. Yeah, you're 50% of what you really are. Yes 124:08 And guys like TJ Dillishaw, they're constantly switching. 124:12 Guys like Corey Sandhigan, constantly switching. 124:14 So they're comfortable from any stance. 124:16 That is such an advantage. 124:18 It's such a huge part of the game. 124:20 You know, in that second fight with Izzy, 124:23 that's he got me with a switched left, 124:26 left straight down the pipe. 124:29 And the switching put me off. 124:31 I think Drake has did it a few times as well. 124:33 He switches pretty well. 124:34 Um just it you're exactly right. It is such a powerful maneuver an ability to do because for that split second when you see them switch 124:42 You have to you have to like take your strategy and then move over to your Southpaw strategy, right? 124:49 Instantaneously and then take it into consideration that all these punches are coming at totally different angles now 124:53 Yeah, exactly exactly and all your attacks come at totally different angles now too because you're dealing with a completely different 124:59 in a defensive position. 125:00 Exactly, and then how fast you make that adjustment 125:03 is obviously where Fight IQ and everything else 125:06 comes into it, it's just, it's make or break. 125:08 And it seems to be really popular right now. 125:11 I feel like guys coming into MMA 125:13 are like really big switch hitters, 125:15 like they're starting it, 125:17 because it takes a while, it takes years of practice 125:19 to get comfortable in both sides. 125:21 So I can fight in Southpaw, 125:23 but my defensive game isn't anywhere near as good 125:26 as my orthodox side, you know? 125:28 And that's kind of what you need when you're when you're standing in a different sense 125:33 Well, that's one of the reasons why Terrence Crawford is so great is that you know his coaches told him 125:38 Hey, man, stop fucking around with Southpaw. Just stick to one side. He's like what fuck you 125:45 Figure it out. And so he got to a point where it's like he's the best switch hitter since Marvin Hagler 125:50 Yeah, like he could switch up with and so you don't know what's coming like he'll start off a fight Southpaw 125:55 And you're like, oh, he's fighting Southpaw and then all of a sudden he's orthodox and he stuns you now Southpaw again 126:00 Now he's orthodox again. He's just switch him back and forth and yeah combinations are coming freely from both sides 126:05 Like it's such an advantage because it's like fighting Southpaw's and fighting orthodox fighters 126:10 They're like two different strategy sets like a Southpaw game and an orthodox game 126:15 They're very different very different shots very different openings like very different opportunities and especially in MMA where 126:25 Wrestling is obviously prevalent. 126:27 So having that lead leg not there, 126:30 like if you're an orthodox guy 126:33 and you're used to shooting on that orthodox side, 126:35 that lead leg, that lead left leg, 126:37 and they switch, your takedown games are off. 126:40 And if you're a wrestler, that's tough. 126:44 I would feel like if you're a young fighter 126:47 and you're just learning right now, 126:48 my God, start switching. 126:50 There's no reason to not do it. 126:52 I think that's what they're all doing. 126:53 I think they have to. 126:54 There's a lot of like orthodox, like right-handed kids 126:57 that are just learning, starting in Southpaw now. 127:00 Yeah. 127:00 But then part of me says, 127:02 but what if you just developed such an elite style 127:05 with one stance? 127:07 Like that, there's something to that too. 127:08 Yes. 127:09 Just getting so good at checking kicks 127:10 and so rock solid in one stance. 127:13 Yeah, like Perrera. 127:14 It doesn't. 127:14 It doesn't switch. 127:16 No, very rarely. 127:17 Yeah. 127:17 Very rarely. 127:18 If he does, it's just like while he's throwing 127:19 combinations, he'll switch a little bit, 127:21 but it's generally that left hook 127:23 Yeah, he's coming out of nowhere and that right hand and that that calf kick that's so weird 127:28 He's hitting you with like that big toe. Yeah, his big toes like this big 127:35 Size of his feet, man 127:36 He's like digging the side of his foot into your calf and that that 127:41 Petrusion of like where his tow 127:44 Man, yeah, he's got a rock. He's got like a foot built for that kid. He's got like a little hammer 127:49 Yeah, he's like tagging your your calf muscle and his posture doesn't break at all because he's got long long legs 127:54 He's tall obviously and he can just chip away to like a jab 127:57 He doesn't need a doesn't need a close distance doesn't need a back away body posture body positioning doesn't change for striking 128:04 The tall long stance is such an advantage. Yes 128:08 It's a giant advantage and you can speak to that because like you've been in situations where you've had a spar and 128:14 When you're or fight people that are much taller than you it's such a weird thing 128:18 Yeah, they're so far away from you and they can hit you and you can't hit them 128:21 Yeah, so you have to do all these things to try to get in and get reeds out of them 128:26 I've never lost to someone shorter than me 128:29 Can you look that up? 128:33 But it's such an advantage 128:35 That's one of the things why I moved up to like heavyweight because 128:39 In middleweight, I was fighting everyone was taller than me anyway like Dorita, Izzy, Drickus, Jamia 128:45 They're all taller than you. They're all 6'2", 6'4". So there wasn't much change. There wasn't much difference. These guys are just 128:52 bigger, obviously heavier and 128:54 slower. Well, the freak of the division is Bulgaria. 128:58 You ever seen Bulgaria's? You know that really tall dude? Is a kickboxer? Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Come over. 129:05 How do I, am I pronouncing his name incorrectly? 129:09 There's so many names in the UFC that I fuck all of them up. I combine them all together. Even ones 129:15 that I know my brain doesn't recognize it it's because there's also like a ton of the same 129:20 names in there yeah but there's that many silvers and oliveras and there's a lot of silvers a lot 129:26 of oliveras there's a lot of Nurmagomedov's now oh my goodness you'll see both you're 129:34 see Bulgari that's how you say his name I'm pretty sure he is the the really tall kick 129:41 Boxer that's Alex Pereira's training partner. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. So he's like six six and he's fighting at 185 129:48 Yeah, just like Pereira was exactly just talking gigantic 129:54 He's so fucking tall for that weight class. Yeah, and he's elite elite kickboxer. Just so smooth 130:02 You're a how do you do you think he'll be able to because Pereira isn't an anomaly for this like 130:09 Like, how do you think his transition will be? 130:14 Well, fortunately, he's training with Pereira, right? 130:17 And they both were training with Glover, which I think was a big thing. 130:21 Big part of it. 130:21 Because Glover Teixeira, for like six years, people don't realize this. 130:25 Before he even got to the UFC for six years, Glover Teixeira was the boogeyman. 130:30 He was the guy that everyone was terrified of, but he couldn't get out of Brazil. 130:33 So he couldn't get a visa to come to America for whatever reason. 130:36 So he couldn't fight in America. 130:37 So he was just training and fighting in Brazil and everybody would talk about when you would talk to the high-level guys 130:43 Like who's the scariest guy that's not in the U.S. He's a glover glover is a fucking monster 130:47 Yeah, by the time he got to the U.S. He was already in his mid to late 30s 130:50 So he had already and he won the title in his 40s. Yeah, right. So he he had already 130:56 passed his prime probably, you know, and 131:00 He is so knowledgeable 131:02 He obviously elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt phenomenal wrestling and then great striking as well 131:08 And knows how to combine the two of them together. And so with him working with Alex 131:12 I think it really sharpened his striking skills 131:15 Yeah, and that's when he won the title and then on top of that like when he beat yambo hovich 131:20 And then on top of that him working with Alex really tighten up Alex's takedown defense 131:25 Yes, I kind of filled each other's holes. Yes, and they're both like super elite at what they do 131:32 And both very smart jiu-jitsu top game was insane insane 131:36 He'd take you down and he's and he's not like a lay-in pray sort of guy. He gets you down 131:41 He's gonna beat you up. Yeah, he was more people like that that Anthony Smith fight. Oh god 131:47 Yeah, and again, he was a guy that was Chuck Liddell's training partner way back in the day 131:53 Yeah, that's why I first heard from the pit days with John Hackelman way back in the day 131:59 Yeah, yeah, so I'd heard about Glover way back then and they were like dude this guy's a motherfucker 132:03 Yeah, and it took forever for him to get to the UFC. Yeah. Yeah, and so with him training was so 132:10 Bulgaria's training with 132:12 Pereira and Glover. I think is a giant must I'm saying his name right 132:16 but pull up pull up a pull up his last fight because he 132:24 Can't remember the dude's name he 132:26 Here, yeah, that's it, Mansour Abdul Malik. 132:31 And Abdul, you're see Bulgaria. 132:34 And Abdul Malik is super talented and massive potential. 132:39 And Bulgaria just tuned him up, man, just tuned him up. 132:43 It's just the difference in striking was so different. 132:45 I mean, he has a victory over Pereira in kickboxing. 132:49 Pereira stopped him in one of the fights, 132:51 knocked him out cold, but they fought three times, 132:53 but he's that good. 132:55 So he's that elite on his feet and he's super tall and because of all the training that he's had with Glover 133:02 Look at this take down defense phenomenal get back up to his feet quickly separates. He's fighting it. Well, and 133:08 Malik is an excellent wrestler 133:10 He's really good and really strong and super athletic and had up until this point been undefeated 133:17 Was mauling people inside the UFC, but your say just put it to a man 133:22 And yeah, it was a bad one too because Abdul Malik is so tough that he endured maybe more punishment than he should have and 133:30 Really got badly beaten up in this fight when when you that tool is well 133:34 You can get such power look at these fucking knees. You're such big livers. Yes 133:39 Like Tommy herds, you know that that like you're getting all that leverage behind those shots 133:45 There's the wide shoulders and the length of the arms and it's all like 133:49 accelerating to the target and all your weights. 133:52 Look at that left hook, oh my goodness. 133:54 So it's just a matter of time. 133:56 He just keeps getting touched over and over and over again 133:59 and Bulgaria's just doing it so slick. 134:02 And it was just a brutal, brutal beat down. 134:06 And then he came back, Abdul Malik came back, 134:09 I think a little too soon in his next fight 134:12 and lost again, just didn't seem like the same guy. 134:16 He was just, and survived too many of these, man. 134:18 Yeah, too many of these moments where he was getting just destroyed 134:23 Yeah, and now he's screaming at him while he's down. I 134:27 Think that might have been the end of the round. No, it was but I think he was also saying he was out 134:31 Yeah, I know the colonel. I think he was we certainly was close to it and then he got beat up again the next round tight 134:37 Kickboxing hook exactly like it's just when you know and you could speak to this when you're fighting a guy 134:43 who's not a bit that's on his base you can get so good if you're a wrestler you start striking when 134:49 you're 28 you get pretty good but there's stuff that happens in a long prolonged fight where the 134:55 series of exchanges where there's openings that you're going to leave that you're not aware of 134:59 and then a striker a seasoned striker is going to be able to capitalize well and you throw you 135:04 throw in fatigue as well right when when you start relying on instincts and things like you 135:09 You start like sleepwalking almost and you get that tired, like yeah, if you, if you, you're 135:15 gonna, you're gonna go back to the roots to what got you to where you are. 135:19 Right. 135:19 Right. 135:20 Especially when you're tired and when a guy is tired, but he's very efficient at striking, 135:25 you could still throw tight combinations. 135:27 You still, you don't get wild and loose, which is one of the craziest things about 135:31 Strickland. 135:32 Like when he's tired, he gets wild and loose, just like literally like windmill 135:38 punches at an elite level. 135:40 It looks like from all the clips in his Instagram, he spars like that too. 135:45 Like he's just like gassed and throwing bombs. 135:50 And he's always sparring. 135:52 I know, always. 135:53 Always sparring. 135:54 That's a main part of his training. 135:56 Like if you have his style, you can spar more than others, right? 135:59 Yeah. 136:00 You've not taken the head trauma that his partners are. 136:02 That's true. 136:03 That's one of the things that he spoke to. 136:04 He said he spars more than anybody and he gets hit less than anybody. Yeah. Yeah, and I yeah, that's there's something 136:12 Beneficial, I think he's buying partners probably shouldn't be sparring as much 136:17 But I mean look if you could train with that guy you're gonna learn some stuff 136:21 Yeah, yeah that guy that's like battle tested. He's been in so many fucking wars 136:26 He's going through something with the UFC right now where like he says his heart isn't in MMA anymore 136:31 He wants to get out. He wants to be able to box Jake Paul 136:34 Oh, I don't know I don't know. He's like he's the one guy that he's he says some wild crap 136:40 But some a lot of it happens like he gets away with it like like like when he said I'm gonna 136:46 Just gonna sit out until I get my title shot. I was like, ah, you're an idiot. What are you doing? 136:51 What are you doing? Lo and behold two years later. He's fighting for the belt 136:55 Like straight straight up. I don't know at the end of the day 136:58 He's a fan favorite and that's a big factor 137:01 If you're trying to sell a fight. Yeah, and the UFC needs to sell fights 137:04 Yeah, and if you've got a world champion, you know like Hamzat and you need someone to fight him 137:09 Who better to sell the damn fight than John Strickland? He's gonna talk mad amounts of shit. Oh, and it's gonna be racist 137:17 It's gonna be racist and you know that gets people watching. Oh, yeah 137:23 Just because of the controversy of it all well 137:25 He knows how to stir up the pot. Oh my goodness. That's for sure 137:29 Doesn't he were you surprised by the Hamzah fight as? 137:33 Everyone else was yeah like I I don't know what to take from it like I think Hamzah lost too much weight 137:41 That's what I had heard 137:42 I had heard he had given up on 185 and he wanted to go up to 205 and challenge for the belt and 137:47 Was training and preparing for that and then they offered him a big money fight with Strickland 137:51 And he decided to take the fight with Strickland, but I don't think they gave him a lot of time 137:55 I don't I don't think they get I think for that guy 137:58 He gets so fucking big that I think he needs a lot of time to get down to 185 138:02 That makes more sense to me than 138:05 Strickland having the perfect anti 138:09 Chamaev game. Well, do you remember when Chamaev missed weight with Nate Diaz by like eight pounds? Yeah? 138:15 Yeah, yeah, it's that kind of thing. It's like what he what he was doing was kind of bananas 138:20 Yeah, which is crazy because he started at Walter weight mm-hmm same thing 138:24 He went yeah, he did that that fight island well to wait middle wait back to back 138:28 Yeah, that's kind of put him on the map and then he disappeared for a little bit 138:31 Yeah, well, you know, I mean he's a controversial character to put it lightly. Yeah, very but goddamn when he's on 138:39 Like when he picked up the leech and he carried him over to Dana White and he's just talking shit while he's mauling 138:45 Yeah, yeah when you have that level of control and I'm gonna jump back to that trickest fight 138:50 It's just nuts it did to do that to to drickus to the champion 138:55 I know like it wasn't it was crazy. Yeah, and 138:59 Even the closest round which was round five a lot of those positions were given to him 139:05 Taken away from him by the ref anyway, right like 139:10 The ref was like, ah, there you go. Okay. Have here's a shot for you. Oh drick. It was almost like it was enough 139:17 Like enough control like come on. We want to see something happen get up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I got I want to get your opinion 139:23 What do you what do you think about that pressure hold game like? 139:28 because I like I'll 139:30 If someone walks into your house and holds you down for 15 minutes, you're in trouble right regardless 139:35 Yeah, but but like where does it stop of like where it's not fighting anymore, right? It's just control. Yeah 139:43 Where's that? It's a good question. Yeah, I am a purist 139:47 I believe if someone could hold you down like Ben Askern used to do in Bellator and just give you know by the rules for five rounds 139:53 That's it like and if you want to get up figure out a way to get up 139:56 But if you can't get up well, you're definitely losing 139:58 Yeah, you know you might not be losing the way Gonzaga will beat cro-cop here
