What We Built... And What We Buried: Episode Two - The Agreement

🎧 The Devil Within — Episode 2: The Agreement What happens when success… becomes a problem? By the 1920s, the world had been illuminated. Homes were wired, cities glowed after dark, and the lightbulb—once revolutionary—had become ordinary. But beneath that success, something unexpected was happening: The bulbs were lasting too long. Consumers weren’t replacing them. Sales began to flatten. And for an industry built on production, durability—once the ultimate goal—quietly became a threat. In this episode, we step inside the rooms where that problem was solved—not through innovation, but through alignment. The formation of what would become known as the Phoebus cartel didn’t just standardize production or stabilize markets… it redefined lifespan. A lightbulb, it was agreed, should last around 1,000 hours—not because it couldn’t last longer, but because it shouldn’t. And once that standard was set, everything changed. Bulbs that lasted too long were no longer celebrated… they were penalized. Durability wasn’t improved… it was managed. Failure wasn’t avoided… it was engineered. This wasn’t a conspiracy. It was a system. And once that system worked… it didn’t stay contained. Because the real story isn’t just about lightbulbs. It’s about what happens when failure becomes a feature—and how that decision reshaped the way things are made, sold, and expected to break. 🎧 Follow The Devil Within wherever you get your podcasts 📺 Watch full episodes on the Evio Creative YouTube Channel 📱 Instagram • TikTok • Facebook: @thedevilwithinpod Learn more about your ad choices.
