E345 Judge With Confidence: The Ultimate Playbook for Dairy Cattle Judging

In this episode, we take you ringside in Ecuador with internationally renowned judge Callum McKinven. Drawing from over 40 years of experience in 32 countries, Callum shares straight-shooting wisdom and practical tips for dairy judges at every stage—especially the next generation getting started in the ring.

What We Cover:

• Why confidence isn’t a show—it’s discipline. And why the crowd is not your boss.
• The real reason your ring flow, timing, and preparation matter more than memorizing any script.
• McKinven's repeatable class evaluation pattern: start wide, scan for balance, observe locomotion, and assess feet, legs, rib, angularity, and mammary system.
• How to replace vague language with clear, positive, three-trait reasons—while looking at the animals in front of you.
• The secrets to building trust and avoiding confusion: clear pointing, a steady pace, and eyes off the stands.
• Specific advice for youth and novice classes: approachable judging, the "bottom six" strategy, and why encouragement builds better exhibitors—and a better industry.
• The importance of cultural awareness and adapting your professionalism when judging internationally, without ever compromising standards.
• Tips McKinven learned the hard way (including shoes, mics, and standing positions!) plus a checklist you can use for your very next show.
• Why the decisions you make in the ring ripple outward—shaping not just show results, but breeding, herd quality, and the future of dairy.
