Um, also the way Alabama used Caleb downs as a freshman is 1:58 maniacal. He was a tackling machine. I'm not saying he's Caleb, Caleb downs, obviously, 2:03 but I'm saying he is like that. And the usage of him in this defense as, as the nickel and 2:10 being the nickel, he can drop back and play safety. And then, and when he does that, 2:15 that allows Earl little to get into the box and create some things. 2:19 But more than anything else, all of the great things we've seen about Jay Timmons, and we'll talk about it. 2:25 You see how different this defense is when he's not out there. Because when he's not out there, this is not a complete defense. 2:31 This is a flawed defense. And so he has this way of holding everything together. 2:38 And there's a lot to be said for that. And if you're a true freshman holding a defense together, you are no longer just a true freshman. 2:45 No and if you're a true freshman where Tony has said your name in the same 2:49 sentence as Caleb Downs multiple times this week and I haven't jumped in to 2:52 stop him like that's you know what we this is the year where Tony's comping 2:57 freshman to Caleb Downs and we're talking about you know the greatest 3:01 players in Ohio State history it's like well you never comp anyone to 3:04 Orlando Pace but you know we're gonna probably have Jeremiah Smith ahead of 3:07 him in that conversation it's like we're kind of breaking all of the 3:09 long-standing rules. Tony even tried to put Antoine Winfield's number 3:13 over 11 on Jay Timmons earlier in the week. 3:16 So this is a rules are made to be broken kind of season, 3:19 I guess, but yeah, Jay Timmons, when he's not out there, 3:23 it is a totally different Ohio State defense. 3:25 And they were able to, they were fine without him 3:28 when they were playing Iowa, 3:29 because Iowa wasn't, Iowa was not in 11 personnel 3:33 or 12 personnel a lot where you're getting, 3:36 you've got three wide receivers out there 3:38 and you need the nickel. 3:40 There are a bunch of teams that are gonna play 3:41 in the back half of the season 3:42 and that are going to be teams that are going to, you know, USC, 3:46 you're going to need that nickel out there, Oregon, 3:48 you're going to need that nickel out there. 3:50 You're, these are, these are games that these are going to be Jay Timmons games. 3:54 And I think Jay Timmons' role on this team and importance on this team 3:59 is only going to continue to go up as the season moves along. 4:03 Someone else who I think that is definitely true of Tony, 4:05 I'm going to give you a breakout freshman named Chris Henry, Jr. 4:09 And man, we don't, you know, we always try and set the expectations for like, what's a good season for a true freshman and, you know, you sort of think, well, what's a good season. 4:23 It's like, I don't know, 600 yards, 700 yards, like no, that would be like the second greatest season for a freshman in Ohio State history. 4:29 Chris Henry Jr. has not played that much over the first half of the season. 4:34 He hasn't gotten the ball that much, I should say. 4:35 He's played a bunch which tells you exactly what the coaching staff thinks of them 4:39 Like they they've got him out there in big moments against good opponents. They trust him to do all the little stuff 4:45 they trust him to block they trust him to make the plays that he needs to make and 4:49 Right now. He's like like top five ish give or take in terms of receiving yards for a true freshman Ohio Statewide receiver top six 4:56 Hey, it's like eighth. Okay, so but but not far from not far removed from the top five and 5:03 And you're basically at the halfway point of the regular season and he's already at that point 5:07 So you're you're looking at someone who is already on track to be the 5:13 second third biggest true freshman season potentially for a wide receiver 5:19 Obviously a lot can change in the back half of the season depending on who's playing quarterback depending on how the offense functions 5:23 Oh, there's a lot of there's an obviously a lot of it depends 5:27 But as you've gotten to the halfway point or a little past there for the regular season 5:31 and it feels like Chris Henry Jr. has done his part 5:34 to make himself someone they feel comfortable playing, 5:36 to make himself someone they feel comfortable 5:38 throwing the ball to in big games, 5:39 had a couple really big catches against Indiana. 5:43 That is a breakout true freshman star to me. 5:46 He'd probably already be sixth 5:48 if he hadn't had those three drops in the season opener. 5:52 But since then, he made a fantastic sideline catch. 5:56 He was another sideline catch on a bailout, 5:59 uh, kind of a little scramble for, uh, for Julian saying, so yeah, 6:03 he's part of the offense and he looks comfortable out there. 6:06 He's able to make defenders miss on his long 75 yard dime, 6:11 quick screen, quick pass from, uh, Luke Fahey, uh, back earlier in the season. 6:17 He's can run all of the routes and is, he's not like a body catch or anything like that. 6:23 He's, he's got great ball skills and he's only going to get better. 6:27 and yeah, he's about 60 yards behind Carnell Tate right now from Carnell Tate's 2023 season 6:37 and then he'll get there eventually, really needs to increase the workload in terms of 6:41 receptions and the targets because the big plays are there. 6:46 Now let's see him pick up three yards once in a while. 6:48 Can you do that? 6:49 Can you just three yards in a cloud of dust? 6:51 Maybe probably going to see some more of that, frankly, moving forward with the 6:56 quarterback situation that Ohio State has. 7:00 I think it's also fair to put Riley Petty John on this list. 7:04 One of the, uh, the fan favorites for the Buckeyes, 7:07 he's tied for first with four tackles for loss. 7:11 He's, um, he can play all three linebacker positions. 7:15 He's just, you know, he's gotten better because earlier in the season, 7:20 maybe you saw a couple of mistakes, but he would, 7:21 that he would make up for it with big play after that. 7:24 And now you're not really necessarily seeing the mistakes, the run game, 7:27 the run defense is very strong for the Buckeyes right now. 7:30 He's got two sacks on the season, which is second on the team. 7:34 He's he's certainly not a liability out there at all. 7:38 We've seen him get his hands up and knock passes down. 7:41 He's just he's just coming into his own right now. 7:45 And, you know, we can put T.J. 7:46 Alfred on this list as well as another second year linebacker 7:50 who is essentially starting linebacker for the Buckeyes. 7:52 These guys are out there in their four man rotation, 7:55 but with Riley Petty John, 7:57 you can see all of the reasons James Lordinitis 8:01 loved him as a recruit. 8:03 And you're seeing all of these things come out 8:04 of the season for the Buckeyes. 8:07 Yeah, and the stats don't really do it justice 8:10 because the biggest play he made all season, 8:12 I don't think showed up on the stat sheet at all. 8:14 And that was the last offensive play for Indiana 8:17 where Josh Hoover is in the pocket 8:19 and can't really step into his throw 8:21 because Raleigh Petty-John is absolutely screaming at his face and getting held quite flagrantly 8:29 at the same time. And so, you know, why did Josh Hoover float that pass out just out of 8:35 bounds? Well, Kurt Zignetti said at his press conference on Monday it was the pressure and 8:39 he couldn't really step into the throw. And again, that doesn't, you know, I don't know, 8:43 he may have been credited with a QB hurry on the play, but you know, you can also, 8:47 you can, you know, also credit him with a save. I know that's a baseball stat, but 8:50 But he was the closer for Ohio State on that play that made it possible that the defense 8:55 got off the field. 8:57 So yeah, I think he's a good one. 9:00 I think TJ Alford is very much merits being in this conversation as well. 9:06 You can go through the defense and there's a lot of guys who I think you could say 9:11 are sort of working their way towards it. 9:13 It feels like Zion Grady who was also kind of in Josh Hoover's face in the last play. 9:18 like he feels like he's working his way 9:21 towards being in this conversation. 9:22 I don't think he's there yet. 9:25 Does Devin Sanchez need to get talked about a little bit here 9:28 where he played last year, but wasn't a starter 9:32 and he's played this season as a starter 9:35 and you see the drop-off. 9:37 Like I know the past interference calls, 9:39 like we've all seen it, I got it. 9:41 But you look at the drop-off 9:43 between Jermaine Matthews and Devin Sanchez out there 9:47 and anyone else on the team out there at the outside corner positions and it you know it's like 9:53 they go off the edge of a cliff as a defense as soon as those guys aren't out there which 9:58 it's not perfect but he's been pretty good this season on the whole they've played some very good 10:04 wide receivers like Charlie Becker is going to get a lot of good corners and make them look not 10:09 very good this year and I think Devin Sanchez deserves to be in this conversation a little 10:14 but because he's just, he's been, he's certainly taken a significant step forward in terms of his 10:19 role on the team this year. And if your corners aren't good, you're not the number one SP plus 10:26 defense in the nation. So I, you know, I think, could it be better? Yes. Will it get better 10:30 with time? Yes. He's not, this is not a finished product. But I think this is definitely 10:35 someone who has taken some noticeable steps forward this year. Yeah. And as long as he 10:39 continues to do so, I think it'll be somebody that could be mentioned there. I don't know 10:44 But what do you guys think? 10:44 Who is the breakout star this year for the Buckeyes? 10:48 Somebody who hasn't been a star number four, somebody who may be brand new. 10:51 Go ahead and throw your thoughts in the comments. 10:52 We'll check those out. 10:53 And of course we are talking about this over at BuckeyeInsiders.com on the Insiders Message 10:57 Board talking about many other things as well. 10:59 We invite you over there. 11:00 It is the absolute best way to support what we do. 11:02 So come on over and see us. 11:04 That will do it from here. 11:05 Thank you all for tuning in and we will talk to you all later.
