Who Are the Elohim? The Gods in God's Divine Council

Who are the Elohim? Why does Psalm 82 describe God judging among the gods? And who were the sons of God mentioned throughout the Old Testament? In Episode 1 of The Elohim, a four-part Broadcasting Seeds series, Bennett Tanton investigates the biblical Divine Council and the spiritual beings described in Scripture.Genesis opens with the word Elohim, but that Hebrew word is not used exclusively for the God of Israel. Scripture also uses it in passages involving other gods, spiritual beings, and even the mysterious appearance of Samuel in 1 Samuel 28.So what does Elohim actually mean?Drawing on biblical passages, the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient Jewish writings, and the scholarship of Dr. Michael Heiser, we examine a populated unseen world and the God who rules over it.In this episode:

• What the Hebrew word Elohim means
• Why Psalm 82 describes God judging other gods
• The Divine Council and the sons of God
• Cherubim, seraphim, watchers, and heavenly princes
• What the Dead Sea Scrolls reveal about Deuteronomy 32:8
• The connection between Babel and the nations
• Why Jesus quoted Psalm 82 in John 10
• What it means that believers will judge angels

We also compare the biblical descriptions of heavenly beings with traditions found in 1 Enoch, early Judaism, Christianity, and other ancient religious systems. The central question: If God is the only true God, why does Scripture describe other Elohim? This is not an argument that other gods are equal to Yahweh. It is an investigation into what the biblical writers believed about the unseen world and what distinguishes the Creator from every created spiritual being.SUPPORT BROADCASTING SEEDSKingdom Field Manual: The Deuteronomy Filter
