Lincoln Riley's Final Hope? Gary Patterson Takes Over

This breakdown analyzes the current state of the USC Trojans program as they enter a critical year. By examining the addition of Gary Patterson to the staff, we look at whether the team finally possesses the necessary depth, talent, and coaching structure to compete at the highest level. If you are following USC football, this context is essential for understanding the pressure mounting on the coaching staff.
We explore why Lincoln Riley has addressed the primary issues that previously hindered the team's success. With a proven defensive teacher now in place and special teams revamped, the conversation shifts from rebuilding to results. This analysis provides a clear perspective on the expectations for the USC defense and whether these roster changes will translate to immediate performance improvements on the field.
Big Ten football news: USC football, Lincoln Riley and Gary Patterson face a defining 2026 season. Can USC’s defense survive Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Indiana—and turn the Trojans into a College Football Playoff threat?
Gary Patterson is not merely USC’s new defensive coordinator. His arrival may remove Lincoln Riley’s last credible excuse for why the Trojans have not developed into a complete championship program.
USC is coming off a 9–4 season and a 7–2 record in Big Ten play. The Trojans have an experienced quarterback in Jayden Maiava, explosive offensive talent, greater roster depth, returning experience along the offensive line and another talented recruiting class. Mike Ekeler has also been hired to improve USC’s linebackers and special teams.
The question is no longer whether USC has enough offensive talent. It is whether Patterson can repair the championship details that have repeatedly failed the Trojans:
Run fits and gap control
Open-field tackling
Situational discipline
Fourth-quarter defense
Road-game preparation
Special teams and field position
USC does not need a top-five defense to threaten Oregon, Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten. A top-25 or top-30 unit could turn a few critical third-down stops, forced field goals and fourth-quarter possessions into the difference between another 9–4 season and a 10–2 College Football Playoff résumé.
But if USC continues to lose because it cannot stop the run, tackle consistently or finish important games, the defensive coordinator can no longer receive all the blame. The Trojans would have to ask whether Lincoln Riley is building a championship program—or simply another dangerous offense.
Is Gary Patterson USC’s missing piece, or is his arrival about to reveal that the Trojans’ problem runs much deeper?
