Changing Landscapes in Higher Education - HeVo 76

On today’s episode, Jessica welcomes back Dr. Jason Younker (Assistant Vice President and Advisor to the President on Sovereignty and Government-to-Government Relations at the University of Oregon and Chief of the Coquille Indian Tribe) on the podcast. Dr. Younker was a guest on Heritage Voices Episode 73 “Exploring the Ethics in Experimental Archaeology”, but Jessica invited him back because there was clearly so much more to discuss. In this episode, we talk about how Kennewick Man and the Coquille Tribal Council set him on his path in Anthropology and higher education. We talk about the devastating effects of termination and the important distinction between diversity efforts and sovereignty. Finally we talk about his efforts in New York and Oregon to build relationships between Higher Education and Tribal Nations in order to improve higher education for Indigenous students. Even if you are an Arizona Wildcat like Jessica, this episode might just make you want to become an Oregon Duck!
