He Built an Ethical Meat Business — Now He’s Asking Whether He Should Turn It Into an Animal Sanctuary Instead

Sander Van Stee founded Moral Eats on a simple but contested premise: that it is possible to supply meat ethically, with genuine respect for the animals involved and the principles of responsible farming. It is a business built on a moral foundation — and that foundation has led him somewhere unexpected. The question now on the table inside the ethical farming community is one that cuts to the heart of what it means to run a values-driven company: should Moral Eats stay the course as an ethical meat subscription service, or should it evolve into something more radical — an animal sanctuary? He joins Stacey Chillemi to walk through both sides of that debate honestly, what the principles of ethical animal farming actually demand of a business that takes them seriously, and how entrepreneurs navigate the moment when their values push them toward a decision that could transform everything they have built. What he shares about the tension between commercial sustainability and moral conviction, and what it looks like to run a business where the ethical questions never stop getting harder, will make you think differently about what it really means to build something you believe in. The easy version of this story ended when he started asking the hard questions. This episode is what came next.
