Banning Gain of Function Research plus Trump's $1000 Self-Deportation Plan

1. Executive Order on Gain of Function Research:

   • President Trump issued an executive order restricting federal funding for gain of function research, which involves experimenting with viruses and pathogens that could potentially trigger a pandemic.
   • The order aims to prevent US tax dollars from funding such research in countries like China and Iran, and strengthens oversight mechanisms to ensure biomedical research is conducted safely.
   • The controversy around gain of function research became prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic, with theories suggesting the virus might have originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

2. Self-Deportation Program:

   • The Trump administration introduced a program offering $1,000 and travel assistance to undocumented immigrants who voluntarily leave the United States.
   • This initiative aims to save government resources, as deporting an undocumented immigrant costs approximately $17,000.
   • The program uses the CBP home app for migrants to register and self-deport, with the stipend paid once their departure is confirmed.

3. Trade Negotiations:

   • We mention ongoing trade negotiations between the US and Canada, following Canada's federal elections.
   • President Trump is also engaging in trade talks with China, aiming to address tariffs and improve trade relations.

4. Media Coverage and Public Reaction:

   • We highlight media reactions to Trump's policies, noting that pro-immigration advocates are critical of the self-deportation program.
   • It also mentions the media's struggle to criticize the executive order on gain of function research due to its perceived benefits.
