Answering YUr Shailos

๐Ÿ”ฅ Brushing teeth on Shabbos โ€“ four primary halachic approaches

โ€“ Issue is multi-faceted: **Memareiach**, **Sechitah**, **Hachanah**, **Refuah**, **Melabein**, **Uvdin dโ€™chol**, **Chavalah** are all discussed in the literature.

โ€“ **View 1 โ€“ Rav Soloveitchik / Rav Hershel Schachter**:

โ€“ Permits **normal toothbrushing** on Shabbos with:

โ€“ Regular toothpaste

โ€“ Wet toothbrush

โ€“ Rinsing the toothbrush afterward

โ€“ Memareiach: Unlike smoothing a surface, brushing does not **grind down/smooth the teeth themselves**, only removes plaque.

โ€“ Hachanah concern (washing toothbrush โ€œfor after Shabbosโ€):

โ€“ Rav Schachter said it is **for cleanliness and Shabbos oneg**, not to prepare for after Shabbos (e.g., to avoid spouse being upset at a messy bathroom on Shabbos).

โ€“ **View 2 โ€“ Rav Ovadia Yosef**:

โ€“ Allows **wet toothbrush** and **regular toothpaste**.

โ€“ Requires a **designated Shabbos toothbrush** to avoid **Uvdin dโ€™chol** (weekday-like behavior).

โ€“ Advises **not washing the toothbrush** afterward due to **Hachanah** concerns.

โ€“ **View 3 โ€“ Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach / Rav Elyashiv (Rav Elyashiv Weinberg cited)**:

โ€“ Forbids **regular toothpaste** due to **Memareiach**.

โ€“ Allows **liquid toothpaste**.

โ€“ Not particularly concerned with **Sechitah** when using liquid toothpaste.

โ€“ **View 4 โ€“ Rav Moshe Feinstein** (followed by Rav Willig in practice):

โ€“ Forbids using **any paste/gel** due to **Memareiach** when the paste is spread over the teeth.

โ€“ Squeezing toothpaste from the tube is **not the issue**; the issue is smoothing it on the teeth.

โ€“ Forbids **wetting the toothbrush** before brushing because of **Sechitah**.

โ€“ Forbids **washing off the toothbrush** afterward because of **Hachanah** (preparation for post-Shabbos use).

โ€“ Recommended method:

โ€“ Put **mouthwash** in the mouth.

โ€“ Use a **dry toothbrush** to brush while the mouthwash is in the mouth.

โ€“ Avoid turning on **hot water** (Bishul concerns).

โ€“ Do **not** rinse off the toothbrush after.

๐Ÿ’ผ Office Mincha with a Gerer chassid who skips Tachanun at Mincha

โ€“ **Gerer minhag**: Not to say **Tachanun at Mincha** (ever).

โ€“ If the **minyan location โ€œbelongsโ€ to the Gerer** (e.g., his office, or he โ€œowns/runsโ€ the place):

โ€“ โ€œBaโ€™al habayis, minhagoโ€ โ€“ he can set the **minhag of that place**.

โ€“ Others generally follow that minhag, as with a Sefardi-run minyan factory where **Birkat Kohanim is daily**; Ashkenazi Kohanim participate since the hostsโ€™ minhag governs.

โ€“ If it is **not his space** and the minyan is more โ€œneutralโ€:

โ€“ One personโ€™s private minhag (e.g., a single Gerer) **should not override** the general minhag of the group.

โ€“ It is appropriate to have others **daven for the amud** so Tachanun is not regularly dropped.

โ€“ Distinction from Rav Shlomo Zalman:

โ€“ If a place has a **real minhag not to say Tachanun**, one follows that minhag.

โ€“ If Tachanun is skipped **simply to shorten davening** with no minhag basis, one should **say Tachanun** anyway.

๐Ÿ• Wearing a tallis over the head โ€“ who, when, and where in davening

โ€“ **Source and status of Atifa (covering the head with tallis)**:

โ€“ Gemara in Kiddushin and Magen Avraham:

โ€“ **Unmarried men** do **not** do **Atifas haRosh**.

โ€“ Atifa originally associated with **Talmidei Chachamim / distinguished people**.

โ€“ Gemara in Berachos: **Kos shel beracha with zimun** requires Atifa.

โ€“ By **kal vachomer**, **devarim shebikdusha** (which require a minyan) should also have Atifa.

โ€“ Common practice:

โ€“ **Shemoneh Esrei** and **Kaddish / Borchu / Kedusha** said with **Atifa** for a married man.

โ€“ **Krias Shema and Atifa**:

โ€“ Beis Hillel: **โ€œKol adam korei kidarkoโ€** โ€“ Shema can be recited **in whatever body position you are already in**.

โ€“ Since one may not insist on a specific **Amidah** (standing) position for Shema, Atifa, which parallels Amidah for devarim shebikdusha, is also **not required**.

โ€“ Taz and Midrash: Hashem does **not burden** Klal Yisrael to say Shema specifically **standing and with head covered** as would be required for a royal proclamation; **any posture is acceptable**.

โ€“ **Rav Chaim / Brisker minhag as transmitted by Rav Soloveitchik and Rav Schachter**:

โ€“ Tallis **over head** (Atifa) for:

โ€“ **Kaddish**

โ€“ **Borchu**

โ€“ **Kedusha**

โ€“ **Shemoneh Esrei**

โ€“ Tallis **off the head** for:

โ€“ **Birchos Krias Shema**

โ€“ **Krias Shema** itself

โ€“ Reasons:

โ€“ Fulfill **โ€œKol adam korei kidarkoโ€** for Shema.

โ€“ Allow **Tefillin shel Rosh and the Kesher** to remain **visible**, in line with โ€œ**Vโ€™rau kol amei haโ€™aretz ki Shem Hashem nikra alecha** โ€“ these are the Tefillin shel Rosh.โ€

โ€“ **Other devarim shebikdusha** and Atifa:

โ€“ In general, **devarim shebikdusha** require **Amidah and Atifa** unless they take the form of a **pasuk or bracha**, in which case the **โ€œShema modelโ€** applies and they can be without.

โ€“ This explains why **kerias haTorah**, though a devar shebikdusha (requires a minyan), does not require standing or Atifa for each listener.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Learning Torah while lying down

โ€“ Gemara in Berachos: Torah should be learned **โ€œbโ€™eimah, bโ€™yirah, bโ€™retet, uโ€™vโ€™zeiahโ€** โ€“ with awe, seriousness, and exertion.

โ€“ Rav Schachterโ€™s father: word is **โ€œzeiahโ€ (sweat)**, not โ€œzeโ€™ahโ€ (trembling), indicating **physical exertion / ameilus**.

โ€“ Ideal posture and demeanor should reflect **kavod haTorah** and focused effort, rather than a relaxed, lounging attitude.

โ€“ Gemara in Megillah:

โ€“ In times of Rabban Gamliel, Torah was learned **standing**; after his death, people weakened and began to learn **sitting**.

โ€“ Rashi calls the shift from standing to sitting a **reduction in kavod haTorah**.

โ€“ Hence, in principle, **standing** is the highest standard; **sitting** is a concession; **lying down** is a further reduction in formal kavod.

โ€“ However, there is also value in **having Torah on oneโ€™s mind even when lying down**:

โ€“ While resting / going to sleep, it is better to **occupy the mind with Torah** than with nonsense or nothing.

โ€“ **Hirhur (thinking) in Divrei Torah** is certainly permissible in any posture.

โ€“ Practical balance:

โ€“ **Core learning sessions** should be done in a manner reflecting **seriousness and effort** (not lying down).

โ€“ When one **already needs to lie down** (e.g., for rest, bedtime), it is positive to **read/think Torah** at that time.

๐Ÿ“š Considering a career in chinuch (Jewish education) vs. financial concerns

โ€“ Two simultaneous responsibilities in guidance:

โ€“ **Encourage** those who are genuinely suited for chinuch.

โ€“ **Discourage** those who are not appropriate for it.

โ€“ When a person:

โ€“ Has **talent and desire** for chinuch,

โ€“ But is **paralyzed by financial uncertainty** and needs a clear, predictable pay path,

โ€“ This often reflects either:

โ€“ A **lack in bitachon (trust in Hashem)**, or

โ€“ A **rigid personality** that cannot tolerate financial ambiguity.

โ€“ If one is **unable** to get over this โ€œbitachon hump,โ€ chinuch may **not be a viable path** for that individual.

โ€“ Observed outcomes:

โ€“ Most people who entered chinuch and were reasonably suited **do not regret it**, and their families had their basic needs
