Can America regain sanity?

I’ve been thinking that a large segment of the population is simply incapable of rational thought. Maybe the mental illness is due to mainstream news, and the media’s toxic climate. The indoctrination requires water-boarding-level intervention to break. But how do we manage this without destroying our free society?
