Nearly 13,000 People Got Sick From Lettuce. The FDA Thinks It Found the Source.
Nearly 13,000 people became sick, 570 were hospitalized and two died in a massive Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce. On October 2, 2026, the FDA closed its investigation after tracing the outbreak to lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico and finding Cyclospora in environmental samples at locations involved in growing and processing the lettuce.
But the biggest question isn’t simply where the lettuce came from.
When the ingredients on America’s dinner tables cross international borders, who is actually responsible for keeping our food safe?
Dominique and Erica unpack how the FDA, CDC, state health departments, food companies, growers and international regulators work together, what investigators discovered in Mexico, and what this outbreak teaches us about the increasingly global journey from farm to fork.
Important consumer update:
The outbreak is over and the implicated recalled lettuce is no longer expected to be available in stores or restaurants.
Research / fact-check basis:
FDA, “Investigation of Multistate Outbreak of Cyclospora Illnesses: Iceberg Lettuce,” updated October 2, 2026. FDA reported 12,883 illnesses, 570 hospitalizations, two deaths and cases in 21 states. FDA found Cyclospora in two environmental samples during inspections in Mexico, but said there was not enough evidence to conclusively determine exactly how the lettuce became contaminated.
CDC declared the outbreak over September 11, 2026.
FDA also announced October 2 that it plans ten Cyclospora prevention and response activities before the 2027 growing season.
