Washington Square: Guardian of the Graves

Philadelphia is celebrated worldwide as the Cradle of Liberty, but beneath the manicured lawns and historic monuments of Washington Square lies one of the largest forgotten burial grounds in American history. Long before it honored fallen patriots, the six-acre site served as a grim potter's field, later crammed with mass trenches holding over two thousand unidentified Revolutionary War soldiers, British prisoners, and more than 1,300 victims of the catastrophic 1793 yellow fever epidemic. Host Allen Sircy uncovers the chilling secrets resting right under tourists' feet—from Deborah Norris's horrifying 1777 account of unburied coffins to the 1950s excavation that created the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, and the enduring spectral legend of Leah, the mysterious woman in white who vowed to guard the dead from body snatchers and reportedly still walks the park two centuries later.
