Stealing Lincoln's Body

On Election Night in 1876, while the nation was gripped by a razor-thin presidential race, a gang of Chicago counterfeiters crept into Oak Ridge Cemetery on an audacious mission: break into the tomb of Abraham Lincoln, haul his 500-pound coffin into a wagon, and trade the martyred president’s corpse for $200,000 in gold and the release of their master engraver from federal prison. Infiltrated by an undercover Secret Service informant and derailed by an accidental gunshot in the dark, the botched heist triggered a frantic scramble that forced the Lincoln family into a decades-long game of hide-and-seek with the president's remains. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy uncovers the bizarre true crime that led to secret nighttime reburials, a surreal 1901 casket opening, and the drastic decision to encase the Great Emancipator beneath ten feet of solid steel and concrete forever.
