From the Vault: Secret Tunnels & the Haunted Childress House

Today we are heading to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to explore the hidden history and shadowy legends of the antebellum Childress-Ray House. Built in 1847, this unassuming Greek Revival home was once owned by Major John Whitsett Childress, brother-in-law to President James K. Polk. Beyond its presidential ties, the property conceals a surprisingly dark and layered past, from its days as a 19th-century undertaker’s mortuary and hearse garage to local rumors of a secret, bricked-up underground tunnel running beneath the street. We peel back the forgotten history, Civil War lore, and enduring local tales to reveal why the presence of its former residents, Union soldiers, and long-gone occupants can still be felt inside one of Middle Tennessee's most underrated historic gems.
