Congress Plaza: The Boy on the 12th Floor

The Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago has spent over a century accumulating grandeur, secrets, and a staggering collection of ghosts. But among the shadowy figures, none cuts deeper than the spirit on the twelfth floor—a four-year-old boy whose phantom footsteps and quiet laughter echo down the halls after midnight. In August 1939, Adel Langer, a mother who had just fled Nazi-occupied Prague, gave in to the overwhelming isolation of a strange new world. In a horrific moment of despair, she threw her two young sons from the window of Room 1234 before jumping herself—unaware that her husband was sitting across town holding approved Canadian immigration papers for their fresh start. Host Allen Sircy peels back the folklore of the Congress Plaza to reveal the heartbreaking human story behind the specter, where profound grief and tragic timing birthed one of Chicago’s saddest ghost stories.
