Coffin Nails and Broken Hexes: The Legend of Blue Jacket

In the post–Civil War mining camps of Missouri, desperate souls facing ruin, jail time, or tragic misfortune often bypassed courts and doctors to seek help from the supernatural: the ancient folk magic of conjure. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy explores the legendary exploits of "Blue Jacket," an enigmatic, green-spectacled root doctor revered for breaking hoodoo curses across Macon County. From unearthing buried iron charms outside prison walls to neutralizing deadly hexes laid by feared rivals, Blue Jacket walked the thin line between folk magic, human psychology, and spiritual showmanship. Tune in as we uncover the forgotten world of 19th-century conjure doctors, where belief was absolute and hope was the most powerful medicine of all.
