Death Squared: Explosive Growth & Demise of a Mouse Population - John Calhoun (1973) - Overpopulation - Mouse Utopia Experiment

"Death Squared: The Explosive Growth and Demise of a Mouse Population" by John B. Calhoun, MD, is a seminal scientific paper that explores the impact of overpopulation on a controlled mouse utopia. In this groundbreaking experiment, Calhoun investigated how the unlimited availability of resources in a utopian environment led to catastrophic consequences for the mouse population. The paper reveals that as the mouse population grew exponentially, social behaviors and structures started to break down. Aggressive behaviors, social withdrawal, and ultimately, a population collapse occurred. This study has important implications for understanding the effects of overpopulation and resource abundance on the behavior and well-being of a species, including potential parallels with human society. Calhoun's research provides a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of unchecked population growth and the importance of social and environmental factors in shaping the destiny of a population. "Death Squared" remains a thought-provoking and influential study in the field of behavioral ecology, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of population growth and its consequences.
