DeMeco Ryans, the Texans & the State of NFL Defense | MatchQuarters' Cody Alexander

What makes today's best NFL defenses successful?

In this episode, I'm joined by Cody Alexander, founder of MatchQuarters, author, former defensive coordinator, and one of the leading defensive minds in football, for a deep dive into the current state of NFL defense and what it means for the Houston Texans under DeMeco Ryans.

We discuss:
🏈 The ins and outs of DeMeco Ryans' and Matt Burke's defensive philosophy
🏈 Why two-high safety shells have become so prevalent across the NFL
🏈 How the evolution of quarterback play has changed defensive football
🏈 Why many of today's defensive concepts stem from innovations at the high school level
🏈 How personnel often dictates scheme more than scheme dictates personnel
🏈 Why defensive football lacks a universal language—and how different coaches often use different terminology for the same concepts
🏈 How MatchQuarters is working to simplify defensive football by finding the common principles across schemes and making the game more accessible for coaches, players, and fans
🏈 Current NFL defensive trends and where the league is headed
🏈 Film study, coaching philosophy, and football X's & O's

One of my favorite parts of this conversation was discussing why learning defense can feel so much more difficult than learning offense. Offensive football has become relatively standardized in its terminology, while defensive football often has multiple names for the exact same concepts depending on the coach, team, or system. Cody shares why that can make defense feel "gatekept" and how MatchQuarters was created to bridge that gap through education and a shared understanding of defensive football.

Whether you're a Texans fan wanting to better understand DeMeco Ryans' defense or simply love learning the chess match behind NFL football, this conversation is packed with insight from one of the game's premier defensive educators.
