Ninon de lEnclos, Letters - Love, Caprice, and Temper - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the modern Epicurean and freethinker philosopher, courtesan, and writer Ninon de l'Enclos' Letters to Marquis de Sévigné, a work whose authenticity scholarship is divided upon, but which certainly seems reflective of her viewpoints. Specifically, it discusses her advice to the marquis about three different kinds or temperaments of women, two of which are at extremes and ought to be avoided, one of whom is the sort to be pursued, if the goal in love-affairs is amusement, rather than setting up a marriage, household, and family. On the one side, we have the woman of uniformly good disposition, who one may certainly admire, but with whom one is likely to eventually get bored with. On the other end, we have the woman of bad temper, who will be far too difficult to be involved with. The right kind of woman according tol'Enclos, is one who has some faults, who displays some occasional jealousy and temper, but who does so in such a way as to provide signs of her own love and desire.
