Ninon de lEnclos, Letters - Conflicts In Passions and Judgements - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the modern Epicurean and freethinker philosopher, courtesan, and writer Ninon de l'Enclos' Letters to Marquis de Sévigné, a work whose authenticity scholarship is divided upon, but which certainly seems reflective of her viewpoints. Specifically, it discusses some of the conflicts and contradictions that she points out on the part of women, having to do with their passions and their judgements, often bearing upon other women. The two passions that she says are inevitably brought into conflict with each other are the desire to please and the fear of dishonor. These tend to bring women into rivalry with each other. She also discusses the tendency of women to be suspicious and hostile towards "women of the theater", who they fear might attract men away from them.
