Where the Nightmare Lived | After Midnight

At thirteen, she began waking in the middle of the night to find a dark figure standing in her bedroom. She couldn’t move, couldn’t call for help, and sometimes felt something pressing against her chest. Even worse were the nights when she believed she had escaped—only to suddenly find herself back in bed with the figure waiting beside her.

Years later, she would learn that sleep paralysis and false awakenings could explain almost everything she experienced. Almost.

When her family remodeled the upstairs, she moved into another bedroom just a few feet down the hall. The terrifying episodes stopped so completely that she finally began sleeping normally again.

Then her parents moved into her old room.

And before long, her father started waking in the night because he thought someone was standing beside the bed.
