The NIGHTMARE at Mount St. Helens | Real Ghost Stories

Some camping trips are about fresh air and freedom. This one became a brush with the paranormal.

She shared a true story of terror from a weekend trip to Mount St. Helens. What was supposed to be an adventurous getaway—hiking, exploring the Ape Caves, and sleeping under the stars—turned into a nightmare that still haunts her years later.

With no tent, she and her boyfriend decided to camp in the bed of his truck, covered by a canopy and fitted with an air mattress. The first night seemed harmless enough—until the forest went silent. That’s when she heard it: footsteps. Heavy. Slow. Human.

Frozen in fear, they listened as the unseen figure circled the truck. They heard breathing. Hands scraped along the metal. Then came the knocking. First soft, then pounding. Finally, the entire truck shook violently as if gripped by something inhuman. Yet when they peered out into the moonlight—there was nothing. No person. No animal. Just silence.

But the real horror came with the sunrise. This is more than a creepy camping story. It’s a real haunting in the woods, a chilling encounter with a presence that left behind physical proof. Was it a restless spirit tied to the volcanic wilderness? A ghostly remnant of tragedy? Or something darker, lurking where humans don’t belong?
