The Bell Witch: Two Hundred Years of Haunting | After Midnight

The Bell Witch remains one of the most enduring supernatural legends in American history.

Beginning around 1816, the Bell family of rural Tennessee reportedly experienced strange animal sightings, unexplained knocking, scratching inside the walls, moving bedcovers, and physical attacks on young Betsy Bell. Then the unseen presence began to speak.

Before long, neighbors and visitors were coming to the Bell farm hoping to hear the mysterious voice for themselves. The entity eventually became known as Kate, and according to the legend, it could sing, quote Scripture, torment Betsy, mock John Bell, and even predict what it intended to do next.

Many of the story’s most famous details were written down decades later, making it impossible to separate every fact from folklore.

But more than two centuries later, the Bell Witch is still one of America’s most famous ghost stories.
